My son is 10 and wants to deer hunt this year. I know he needs a license but do I have to have one to hunt with him? I have a Hunters Safety Card. Thanks

Yes, get one. do you want to try to explain to a GW you were really just guiding with your son. Think he's gonna believe it?

If I recall correctly they have to be within shouting distance of a licensed hunter

like everyone said. With a licensed hunter with hunt ed card and if I'm not mistaken you can only get an exemption a few times before he needs his hunters education card.

I would say both of you getting hunters ed and your license. No reason to cut corners. I think especially with introducing new hunters its a must to set a good example.

Does not need an exemption to hunt with a hunter that has one, only if he hunts alone.

You must be within "normal speaking distance" rather than shouting distance.

Correct me if I'm wrong.... But the OP is asking if he himself needs a license? If that indeed is the question the answer is yes. Regadless of Hunter Ed, which I'm doubtful is much help to ten y/o's (my older boy is ten), but anyone participating in a hunt must possess a valid license. One does not actually need to have a weapon to need a license. Unless this has changed since 2009, I got it straight from the TPWD main office in Austin.

I got on a lease in Kansas this year. I'm bow hunting and it's 7 hours away. It's hard to take the kids and hunt there. My family owns a small place near Throckmorton, TX. I'll take him there to hunt and he'll be the only one taking a deer. It's not a big deal for me to buy a license I was just wondering if it was needed. I'm gonna have him take the hunters ed course this year too. I'm starting to get more enjoyment out of hunting with him and my family than chasing the big one. Thanks for all the replies and good luck this season!

It used to be 12. You can now get certified at 9.

My son is 10 yes old this year, been taking him hunting for 2 yrs now. Yes he has to have a lic to hunt, but last yr the lic fee was 8.00 I think. Because for him to get a lic to hunt, you have to have a lic. You can get a youth lic until he is 18. But an adult with a lic has to be within normal speaking range.

If you even touch a gun in the field you better have a license if a GW sees it. A license is way cheaper than the fine you could get. Have fun with your son and do you and him a favor and make sure you always stay within the laws.

If I'm not hunting something I must be dead.

Dear Sir:

Thanks for the e-mail requesting information from the Department.

A person is required to possess a hunting license for deer, if the person participates in the take of the deer.  If the person rattles antlers or uses any other device to lure a deer for a shooter, then a hunting license is required of the person.

After a deer is killed any person may assist with the processing of a deer.

If your children will be participating in the hunt, the below license would be required.

Youth Hunting License (Type 169): $7 Valid for any person, resident or non-resident, under 17 years of age at the date of license purchase. Exempt from state stamp requirements. License and state stamp exemptions remain valid for the entire license year.

If further assistance is needed, please contact the license team Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm at 1.800.792.1112, Option 5, then 2.

Thanks,
Amanda Thomas

Comment or Question:

I have a 7 and 6 yr old boys that I take deer hunting with me.
They do not shoot or even touch the gun, they just sit in the
blind with me to help scare off the deer(haha just a little
joke). So do they have to have a lic to sit in the blind with
me?

The Outdoor Annual (free) and the TPWD website has all the information pertaining to rules, regulations, restrictions and what is and what is not required of a hunter and/or angler and their age.

If the poster would read over the Outdoor Annual whether the hard copy or on the TPWD website they would find their answers as opposed to getting mislead information or 'thoughts' above on forums.
