I rescued Deuce 3 weeks ago. He has come along very nicely. His obedience is very good. He sits when I tell him to. He sits before he goes through a door or gate. He heels pretty good, but slightly forward, without any type of choke/pinch collar. He comes to me 100% of the time if I have treats and most of the time if I don't have treats. His down is on and off. He will do it about half the time so it needs work. He is learning his name. His stay is excellent. I actually have to pull him from his position once I tell him to stay. He has not tried to use the bathroom or mark in the house which is amazing since he was a kennel dog his entire life. He has hunted dove for three days (4 hunts). I finally got him to jump up on a platform yesterday. Within the week I want him to jump into the truck. We will see. I am trusting him around the house without supervision for up to 30 minutes. I still keep the belly band on him, but it usually just hangs around his waist. I think this weekend, I may let him sleep next to my bed. Poor Izzy, that is her spot. She is learning to share and she doesn't like it. Those are the good things. The not so good things are that he had a musky stink to him. It is a mildew musty smell. It smells like a sweaty dog. He is very active and runs around and plays when I put him outside. I am not sure what else this could be. I did change his food abruptly, but I couldn't feed him that trashy food any longer. He has a little gas. He also has jowls like a bloodhound. He gets water and food all over his face when eating. I have to clean him up after he eats or drinks. And lastly, he still inhales his food. He will eat all of his food in less than one minute. He often coughs up some afterwards and always burps when he is done. I wish I could slow him down. I always feed him separately so he doesn't think he needs to compete for food. He likes to chew on things, so I always have bones around the house for him. So far, he hasn't tried to chew up anything in the house. He goes through 4-5 times the amount of bones as Izzy. I don't have any new pictures, so his origional picture will have to do for now.

You can try a anti-bloat food bowl to slow him down at meal time. Make sure you take some just daddy and Izzy time, its a big adjustment for her.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

I had no idea what an anti-bloat bowl was. I just looked it up. I thought that was designed so dogs wouldn't put their foot in the water. I actually told people that is what that bowl is for. Funny. I am going to get one this weekend.

I only know because my nephew boards a lab that has to use one.

Our lab seemed to do better with just pouring the food out on a flat surface, like tile, than she did with the bowl. But the bowl worked.
Sounds like Deuce is coming along nicely. Congrats to you both!

I ran him some more in the heat yesterday. He is doing good. I started to collar condition him too. He is getting much better and may be ready for pheasant season this year. Here are a couple of pictures after the run through the yard. After I ran them, I left them in the living room with my wife while I ran to the store. She took these pictures. Deuce is still wearing his belly band. And possibly a new signature picture.

I bought the anti-bloat bowl. It makes him eat as slow as Izzy. He went from 30 seconds per meal to about 5-7 minutes. The only thing is that it looks like it is stressfull. He has to reach and work his way around the bumps. I put his water in it too. He inhales his water too.
I also found out what the smell was on him (or at least I think I found out). His ears had a bad yeast infection. I have been treating it, but I quit becasue I thought it was done. When I smell the inside of his ears, it is the exact musty smell he puts off. I am almost out of the prescription so I will do the home remedy of vinegar/alcohol/hydrogen peroxide.
