Academy in Abilene requires you to pay first, take the receipt to another table and then get your license. My clerk had absolutely no clue. I finally had to show her what to touch on the "touch-screen"!!!

these are all likely min wage, disgruntled employees...theyre gonna mess up. walmart did u right though, i cant even get my local walmart to give me store credit on merch if ive lost the receipt...gotten to know the store manager all to well over such things, shes a real peach. im usually so worried about the same happening i do ck mine before i leave, or at least before i hunt, but ive slipped up and had similar happen too. sucks

Good deal of Walmart to step up, but next time look at your license. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS. I don't care if you get it at Walmart or at a TPWD office, look at it before you walk out of the door. People make mistakes and screw up, it's your responsibility to make sure everything on your license is legit and in order before you take a step in the field.

For me there is a bigger issue here. It is almost to the point you need to be a lawyer to hunt and fish in Texas. Fishing laws are just insane. You can do this here but you can't do that there. The complexity of mans imposed laws now days are meant to sustain cash flow from levied fines when hunting and fishing should be a God given entitlement.

It is now available, as is the duck stamp, from TPWD online sales now. Cost $5 extra convenience charge, or in my case, the wal-mart avoidance charge.... well spent

Several years ago, before NM required you to pay for your license up front, our hunting group was in the Carlsbad Walmart when the clerk overheard one of buddies talking about his service in Iraq. She told him he could get his license at the residents cost. He bought it and he was checked by a gamewarden and he was told he had to be stationed on active service in NM to recieve that benefit. He got a ticket but the warden did go and talk to the clerk at Walmart and the judge dismissed it.

I have a lifetime license anabout 5-6 years ago I went to walmart to pick up my license. Long and lucky story short, I got checked duck hunting. Mine wasn't even a license but a practice sample tags that they run sometimes. Lucky for me I had federal stamp on back and plastic lifetime care in wallet.

I was mad at myself for not checking it before I left he store. I didn't deer or dove hunt so it was the first time I had even pulled it out since I bougt it. Heck the lady working there probably never hunted a day in her life or knew what a license looked like. Coach

"Every" time I have gotten a hunting license at Academy, I have somebody who cannot tell me the options available to me as far as stamps/endorsements/etc, and they always screw it up. I will never get my hunting license there again. When I used Gander Mountain, the person there could answer all my questions regarding licenses and stamps, etc, and got it perfect. I don't know if it was a fluke or not, but I will be using them again this year.

Personally, I don't think anyone should be selling hunting and fishing licenses if they don't have one themselves.

its up to the HUNTER to make sure you have the proper license and endorsements, not the 17 year old girl ringing up the license.

My favorite license story is two years ago I went to Wal-Mart here in Snyder and asked for a federal duck stamp. The lady asked me how many ducks I was going to shoot, and I told her as many as I possibly can and still be within the law. She replied,

"Well I need to know how many stamps to sell you. You have to have a stamp for every duck you shoot."

I told her at $15/duck, I wouldn't be shooting more than 1, just sell me one.

This is also why I always buy the super combo in Texas and similar licenses in other states.

That way should someone every invite me to make a hunt with them, I don't have to question if I can legally do so with what I have. I'm prepared to hunt anything legal, and if I don't hunt several of them, I think the money is going to a decent cause. In my opinion its money well spent either way.

Bought ours yesterday at walmart. No problems, just like every year.

What is the small medium and large lease options I saw online? Just need one for deer and turkey. Do i need to add this on or just pick up the resident one?

They were real busy but the guy at the counter was almost as old as I am (close to dirt) and said "make sure everything is there" then very professionally kept his hand on the license until I read it! After I read it he flipped it over and had me sign it -THEN gave me back my credit card!

Wal Mart takes a pretty bad beating around here, and they do deserve alot of it (including screwing up the OP's license). However, I give them credit for paying the fine and making the situation right. I have to wonder if many of the Academy stores and others would do the same.
