Anyone know if the katy area will still hold good numbers of dove this weekend? Or do you think all those near by fires from Waller and Magnolia will move them out of the area? Just curious to see if anyone knows. Trying to make a hunt out friday morning.

I hunted Katy/Hockley on Monday evening. We were directly down wind of the Montgomery fire. The smoke was thick and carrying large pieces of ash. The wind was really blowing. Only fired three shots, zero kills, as the birds were all out of range and flying by at mach speed.

Hunted Hockley yesterday morning right off of 290. Saw several large groups of birds but again they were high fliers and speeding by. They showed zero interest in my mojos and decoys. One shot, zero kills.

I don't know if was the wind, or the smoke, or both but we have had some tough hunting in the Katy area.

I'm planning to hunt Friday afternoon along a dry creek bed off 529. There are lots of high wires and trees so I'm hoping the catch them on their way to roost for the night.

We don't have water, as all of our tanks are dry. That may be part of our problem as well.

It is nice to be in the field, especially in this cool weather.

Best of Luck if you make it out.

Thanks for the info I was just wondering how people have done since the fire and the cooler air came through earlier this week. Heard some guys nearly got their limit in Katy off of Stockdick School Rd but havent heard from anyone else yet. Thanks and will make a post after the hunt. Goodluck Friday

Hunted Monday morning off 290 large flocks of white wing some flying high, some coming into the fields. That evening it was slow, not much movement til last hour and still nothing like the morning hunt. The fields we hunt are normally better in the morning, so can't say the fire had anything to do with it. I have a nasty head cold and haven't been back out since then.

Hunted 529 at Stockdick School Rd Friday evening and again Sunday morning. There were very few birds in the air. We walked the dry creek and flushed a few but they were well ahead of us and holding close to the cover. Very disappointed on both trips. We walked the open fields and only flushed two.

Is anyone seeing birds in the Katy/Hockley area?

I talked to some other hunters from the 2920 & 290 area and they reported the same. They said there were LOTS of birds taken opening weekend and that a cold front was needed to push some more birds south.

Your thoughts?
