I’m having trouble finding IMR Hi Skor 700x locally and why do all the online sites state out of stock for Winchester WAA12 wads. Are these products no longer available or have they been replaced with a better or lower cost product. I see that Clay Busters are supposed to be the replacement equivalent for WAA12 online but what replaced Hi Skor 700x? I would appreciate any help, pricing and ideas where to buy. I live in Irving and a call to BP in Grapevine state they do not carry either of them.

I forgot to mention I was a member here in 2006 but since I never made a post I guess my account was deleted.

Claybuster wads work great in Winchester WAA12 replacement. where to find them now I am not sure, still bave 500 or so in the supply cabinet. As for the powder not sure on that either, I use hodgdon clays or international for most of my shotgun reloading. There is a place in Mesquite that might have oth just nt remember the name right now

Thanks kmon1,

I think the place in Mesquite is B&H Guns, a buddy of mine in Red Oak told me to check with them after he informed me I missed the Market Hall gun show. Glad to hear someone has tried the Clay Busters they are available online for $9.50 for 500 but S&H is $12.75 so they can keep them. I guess I should have patronized the last of the gun shops in Irving more before they all shut down. But I have always been frugal when it came to spending money…. still have the money…just no where to spend it anymore locally.

I guess I should add this is the load I have been shooting since 1981:

Mec Bushing #29
Hi Skor 700X
WAA12 Wads
1 1/8 oz - 7 1/2 shot
Winchester AA hulls
1200-1250 fps (I think)

I like the 700X because it burns clean but if someone has a better load let me know.

Thanks

Hodgdon International or Universal will get the velocities and are very clean burning. Might have to get different powder bushing though. Plus is Universal is very easy to find International is not quite as popular but is still not that hard to find. Links to Hodgdon data
http://hodgdon.com/mec.html
http://data.hodgdon.com/shotshell_load.asp

Mostly I use clays at 1050 fps for 1 1/8 ounce load in 12ga Winchester AA shells and Winchester 209 primer. my guns shoot very even patterns and clays break and dove die well to that load shooting 7 1/2 or 8 shot

Thanks kmon1,

I will check out the info you provided. I guess I forgot to add I use Federal 209 primers and still have about 2000. I shoot an Ithaca 51 semi auto with a 26” skeet barrel and it has done the job for these loads and my old duck/goose loads of 1600fps before lead was outlawed. I will need to figure out a new load for duck/geese if I get back into hunting them.

I pulled out the MEC my father bought in 1977 the other day and started playing with it. I used it load shells when I was a kid but did not know anything about the recipe. When I dug through the paperwork I had I found the exact recipe you are using except with a wad that is discontinued. Started loading as I emptyed some shells. Gonny try them out soon, maybe today. Cabelas in Allen has 700x and I have found the prices to be very good. To get the 18 grains, I had to step up to the 30 bushing.

Thanks guys for all the help!

I looked up IMR dealers and found some close by places to call tomorrow and apparently a member here is a dealer!

Mike A

That is a good recipe although I cannot take credit for it. Back in the late seventies a guy that I went to high school with Dad opened up a sporting goods store and in the process of hanging out there I befriended a guy that was a skeet/trap shooter. Although I was a little better than average shooter he taught me a lot about shooting, reloading and even included me in hunting trips out of town. My only few experiences with pheasant hunting was because of him. His reloading room was unbelievable, ten single stage and progressive loaders and move reloading supplies than the local shops carried. He sponsored me for membership in the Grand Prairie Gun Club where I shot my first 25 straight on my 25th birthday and although I never shot competition I accidentally learned my new found friend had placed second overall in the state for skeet and trap for all gauges combined.

Anyway to get back on topic, I read that you might want to check the latest reloading data from the websites for those products because 700X has been change since IMR bought out Dupont. Even the Hodgdon website kmon1 listed for Mec bushings with 700X (16.9 grains for #29) is different than what Mec states for 700X (17.5 grains for #29).
Here is the link:

http://www.mecreloaders.com/documents/Miscellaneous/PowderBushingChart.pdf

I looked up my components for the recipe I stated and it is 1200 fps at 11,300 psi with Mec bushing #29. So you may be pushing your psi using a Mec # 30 bushing if you are using the WAA12 wads with Federal 209A primers. Check it out here to be sure:

http://data.hodgdon.com/shotshell_load.asp

I am so glad I have gotten back into reloading because there is a lot of pride in using your reloads and tweaking them to what your gun likes best!

The 700x im using is probably 30 years old. To get 18 grains weight my scale said the #30 was producing 18.0 grains for me. When I buy new powder I will recheck what the bushings are producing. I am using CCI 209 primers. Shot some 2 year old remington shells last week and had 4 dead primers on factory loaded shells that looked brand new. So I am not liking remington right now.

Hey Mike A,

I have to laugh because I’m using up the last of a 30lb keg from 1983 and may have enough powder for a box of shells. I loaded 75 rounds last year with Federal primers from the same year with no duds. I never liked CCI primers, I’m not sure why but I think it is a slower burning primer therefore less psi and unburned powder in the barrel so when I switched to Federal I never looked back. I think I still have several hundred of CCI primers left. Thanks for helping me keep the memory banks stirred.
