I'm thinking of getting another dog. I currently have a plott hound and she is my wife's dog. I've worked with her on blood trailing and she is a natural. I want a dog that will retrieve though. What is your opinion on a good pet as well as a good retriever. I like the way a GSP, weimariners, and vizslas looks. Prefer shorthair and the size range up to 60 pounds. Of course these are all preferences, and mostly what I want is a great dog. Also I hunt dove currently. I want to start hunting quail and think pheasant would be really fun. I don't duck hunt or goose hunt, if anyone would like to get me addicted I'm willing to give it a try.
Thanks

Count my vote for Labs.

Of course my vote is Brittany. And it just so happens that I have four pups for sale ($350) that can go to their new home as early as next Sunday. whistle

I'd go with Vizsla, but I'm partial. Get good breeding and you won't be disappointed. I should have a new litter of red dogs next weekend.

Count my vote to labs also. I have 4 left that can go home today. They have pointer and waterfowl in their blood can't go wrong with them.

I own a lab and I don't think it is what you want. You are looking for primarily an upland dog (pointer/setter) not so much a retriever.

If that type of dog is what I was looking for DB20's Vizsla's would be on my list. He has sold several dogs on this board and not a single complaint (quite the opposite actually) that says a lot for someone and their dogs.

My other options would be English Setter, Springer Spaniel, Brit in no order. Gotta watch all dogs in the heat but labs are worse because their coats.

This is a touchy one (personal preferences being what they are) I think your choice for a GSP is really sound in that a good versatile dog is really nice.
One of my all time favorites was a GSP. If water isn't in the equation I would personally shy away from retrievers. ( I have one and love her) . I have gone to Drathars and really like them solid working dogs, good tracking and retrieving, Good luck in the end they are all nice.

I'm hearing GSP, vizsla and lab, but no one has said anything about a weimariner. Are they good for any kind of bird hunting? I've also considered a Britany but have concerns with their longer hair. Thanks for the input. Keep your opinions rolling I like hearing them.

Hard to find a good field bred weimaraner. Ive only seen one in the last 3 years. Vizslas are my favorite but brits would be my second choice out of the dogs you named.

Owning both a Vizsla and a GSP I would go with a GSP, my GSP is a lot less hyper than my V and my V is 4 YO. Now I will tell you these two are the fist I've owned of both breeds. Before have been labs, love those dogs but high occurance of cancer in them. Just can't take the heart break any more.

There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

Georgeous dog! We had a lab and GSP until we had to put our lab down; we still have the GSP. Both were / are considered members of the family. Our GSP has been a great addition and would encourage you to look at them. They are very versitle and really smart. She loves the water & hunting has come completely natural. We had a litter out of her and have a female left if you are interested. Here is a picture of the puppy we have.

Here is a picture of her mother....(my husband calls her our starter child, lol)

Here is a picture of the sire

If you are interested you can PM me or email me at paradiserayne@live.com

I have Brits and a Chessie, but I have always said if I could only have one dog, it would be a German Wirehair Pointer. They do it all.

That is a beautiful puppy. That is why I like gsp's. Unfortunately Allie is a dominant female (actually how we ended up with her because she was fighting her first owners other female) so I am looking for a male puppy.

GSP. They are very easy to find and on average half the price of hunting bred Vizlas or Weimaraners.
