I guess Sam Houston NF is considered a WMA also. Opening day, you can't swing a dead cat over your head without hitting someone in an orange hat.

old sabine? wow. ive hunted that place for the past 8 yrs and never had a problem with it being crowded. not to mention camping out every yr where im the only tent in the campsite. maybe more folks are not leasing and finding public hunting a better option lately. ive had plenty of good hunts on this wma and never had another hunter walk up on me or even feel crowded at the campsite.

Old Sabine bottom is the same as all the rest. If you go opening weekends or just hunt on the weekends it will be crowded. If you can manage to slip in during the week most of the time you will be one of the only ones in the woods. And the most important thing there is get off the beaten path. From my experience there most hunters will hunt just a few hundred yards from the parking areas.

From my experience there most hunters will hunt just a few hundred yards from the parking areas. I save vacation just so I can do midweek hunts no matter what I am hunting. I bow hunt some and have been trying to take a good buck for the past few years. Its hard to do because if a good buck leaves rubs or scrapes in an area the human traffic is so great on him that it usually spooks him out of the area. I used to hunt 6000 acres of lease at home in La. and I would scout bucks from a distance and never get near their rub/scrap lines and I would almost always get the buck I was scouting. Most folks just walk right up into them and walk all over them. That kills any chance that you are going to see him in the area again. Duck hunting on the weekends are even worse, but at least you don't have to deal with human scent issues.......

I grew up hunting WMA or Type 2`s as they where called back in the 80`s. It was a great idea. $40. permit gave you acess to thousands of acres. Then TPW decided to turn most into trophy areas drawing only. Richland Chambers, Gus England Ect.They are over managed and under hunted. This has put much more pressure on those that are left. Darn shame.
