With in a MOA, the Burris PEPR will serve you well.

Thank you for the kind words. Our customer service department works diligently with our customers to insure satisfaction.

This is very true.

There will always be a latest and greatest when it comes to optics. They are constantly evolving and changing the overall functions to enhance and aid a person to help become more proficient as a shooter. Just look at the last ten years, just with reticle changes.

For years it was a cross hair. Then mil-dot for the Army and the USMC. Now with the hunting optics you have cross hairs, BDC's, #4, #8, fines, heavy posts, then you have ranging reticle like Swaro's BRH and BRX the Zeiss' Rapid Z's 600-1000.

Then to get into the Tactical line with all the miling reticle like our SS new mil-quad, S&B P4, P4 Fine, and H2CMR. Then theres Premier's Gen two XR. The vortex Razor EBR reticles that are hash marks.

With the amount of engineering and amount of thought process that is going into optics, they will forever change.

The buckgold is heavy, mostly because of how large the objective is. And there are guys on here that can tell you how heavy the M4 can get when you start adding things to them the options are endless. There are lights, lasers, rails, bi-pods, lower grips, muzzle breaks, optics and the list goes on and on. The weight can be combersome.

Only you can decide what makes the weapon to heavy and unbareable.

There are guys out there that put so much smithing in to the hunting rifles to make them as light as possible when they hunt. Because they are going in with the intention of hauling or dragging something back out. But it's hunting not killing.

The lighter you are the farther you can travel in my opinion.

But I believe it all depends on your situation.

I agree, and those are all very good things to consider when making a decision. Currently, I hunt on 2 little places out in Mason, Tx. One is a little 100 acre lease, and the other is the 5 acres my grandparents live on. Funny enough, I've seen the 2 largest bucks of my life on that little 5 acres.

This being said, as of now I will not have to carry my weapon any distance greater than a couple hundred yards. However, I still think it would be a waste of money to buy something that is going to be good for the range, and the deer stand, but is too heavy to carry much at all.

I think the Vortex is right down my alley. If I don't like it, I'll send it back and get a Nikon or whatever else. I appreciate you helping me narrow it down.

The diamondback is a much better scope than the prostaff and at least as good, if not better than the buckmaster. PLUS Vortex has fabulous customer service and NIKON doesn't.

Why do you want a 50mm objective? If it's just for more light at dusk and dawn, get better glass instead. The Vortex Viper 3-9x40 can be bought for $180 tax free and free shipping.

Very nice Bob. I got a loaner scope/mount with quick detch and integrated rings from a buddy of mine. It is way too big and heavy, but its clear and solid and I can shoot a 3/4" group from 100 yards, which is plenty for me.

Some folks don't care for them but I have a Nikon Coyote Special BDC mounted on mine. I like the scope. Haven't had any problems out of it. I'm sure there's better ones out there but, for the money it is worth it. Can't see changing it out unless I break something on it or someone "gives" me a nice fancy one.

To let you know in advance, I know nothing about ballistics or optics. The only thing close to ballistics that I know is that what's engraved on the side of the barrel is what size round to buy and place into the breech. That being said, I'm a little confused about the quoted statement above. I've pulled a few targets for the 500 yard prone string of fire and unless someone puts it in the dirt to speed up service they were all target impacts as on any other string of fire. I guess that another way for me to ask would be, is the ammunition available to civilians the same as what the israelis make for the government and if not, what is the difference that would cause the round to tumble? Another reason I ask is because I'll soon be in the market for an M* to hunt with.

Basically if you look at a ballistics chart for a 5.56 round, assuming the common projectile, which is generally a 55 gr, you will see that there is significant bullet drop when you shoot father than 200 yards. At 100 yards, the bullet has a recorded drop of zero inches. At 200 yards, it has a recorded drop of 2.7 inches. At 300 yards, it drops 10.8 inches. Kinetic energy is also significantly lower at 300 yards. This being said, it is truly unnecessary to use optics designed for shooting greater than 300 yards with a 5.56 round, UNLESS you are specifically target shooting. Those rounds lack sufficient energy to kill a large bodied game animal such as a whitetail deer at long ranges, unless you make a head shot.

I am unaware of any israeli made ammunition. I know that for hunting uses, many people shoot rounds like the Hornady TAP 77gr. Of course there are many others, but that is one of the first that comes to mind.

Here is the ballistics information I used.

Based off a 16" barrel, With a longer barrel you increase your accuracy significantly.

I have a Pride and Fowler 10x42mm RR-800-2 Scope. Best scope on the market in my opinion. No target turret adjustments, these scopes are calibarated for your rounds. This rifle shoots 1/2 to 3/4 MOA all day long!

I have an Osprey 10x40x50 on my LR308. Not an expensive scope, and it works great up to about 35x. After that, it gets a little fuzzy.

I am using a Zeiss Conquest 3-9X40 with Rapid z-600 on my RRA LAR 8, Elite Operator. It has been the perfect match for gun, and me.

I put a fairly inexpensive Pentax 3-9x40 on my 16" HBAR and I have no regrets. I did drop $550 for a Nikon monarch 5-20x44 for my $350 .300 win... :-)
