SAN ANGELO, Texas — Lt. Game Warden Doug Seamands, who patrols the outdoors in West Texas, knows what happens when hunting trips suddenly end in tragedy. He says he is still haunted by an accidental shooting in 2005 that killed a young Christoval man hunting dove with three friends one afternoon. "Once a trigger is pulled, it can't be taken back," Seamond said. "Fatal hunting accidents are so preventable, but when they happen it affects everyone involved." With the opening of dove season only days away, game wardens across the state remind hunters to brush up on gun safety before fanning out over their favorite hunting spots. more >> http://www.gosanangelo.com/news/2011/aug/27/game-wardens-brush-up-on-gun-safety/ Hunting is a safe sport as long as shooters remember a few basic rules, Putegnat said.
At the lodge, he said, guides stress these rules:
Never fire at a bird lower than 45 degrees
Keep actions of shotguns open when not engaging in pulling the trigger
Don't solely rely on the shotgun's safety, keep shells from entering the chambers on break over and automatic guns
Never drive with a loaded gun in the vehicle
Unload before crossing a fence," suggested the veteran hunting lodge owner.
Terry Erwin, program director for the TPWD, said the majority of hunting accidents center around the firing of a shotgun, and the No. 1 cause is swinging and firing guns outside of a safe zone of fire.
"Shoot high, and always know where members of your group and standing," he said.

Never heard the 45 degree rule. That's a good one.
Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.

Life is too short, as is. Don't chance it. Don't text and drive.

I've been peppered. I've also had shot sent my way from 50 yds. It hurts! Watch out and be safe out there.

I was peppered one from about 100 yards. Saw the guy shot and ducked with my arm over my head. Only one bb hit me in the elbow but damn it hurt.
If you keep your hair short and your mouth shut, things tend to run a lot smoother.

I use the 4 Rules of Marine Corps Marksmanship safety that were taught to me in boot camp. I made my son memorize them before I let him start shooting.
1. Treat every weapon as if it were loaded 2. Never point the weapon at anything you don't intend to shoot 3. Keep your weapon on SAFE until you are ready to fire 4. Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to fire
These certainly don't cover every single scenario out there. But, they'll prevent most accidents from happening.

My wife was a physician at Tech at the time that happened and saw it first hand. Really, really sad. It made me think about all the times I was in that same situation and what could have happened. The kind of things that keep you up at night.
I'm really trying to set good gun safety habits for my kids. I like the no shots below 45 degrees. My biggest factor was to settle down and not get so anxious. Once you get in the mindset of enjoying the hunt, and that it's not a competition, you find that your mind is clear and you can think and hopefully avoid stupid mistakes that have irreversible consequences.

Yes I read the story. Really would be a sad thing to happen to your hunting buddy. That is the reason I don't allow Alcohol and powder during legal. If something happen it would be a shame and frowned on.

Know your target and what lies beind it. I taught my sons the rules as well. Good to know I am not the only one training my boys this way.
Back from Afghanistan and looking to catch up on the hunting I missed.

It is good to remind us all of the potential hazards so we do not get too relaxed with safety
