I just got back from Namibia last week. First of all I would recommend flying business class because the total travel time to Windhoek is about 25-27 LONG hours. I do not think we did anything different about insurance. We are having our animals shipped back via air. It is more expensive, but it will then only take 3 months for your capes and horns to make it back. My philosophy behind shipping by air is that the fewer days your trophies are en route home then the fewer days they have to get lost or damaged (I stole this idea from Boddington.) So if you can afford it, I would not recommend shipping by sea. I would also recommend taking a .300 win mag or higher if you are doing strictly plains game. I used a .30-06 which is pushing it on the size. I shot 19 things the whole trip, but only lost one which they found 3 days after I left. It was a waterbuck which also happened to be the most expensive thing I shot which made me very angry. If you plan on going june through august then bring warm clothes because it will be super cold. Make sure to be comfortable taking shots to about 300 yards off of shooting sticks. My longest shot was 450 yards, but I think that is pretty abnormal to take one that far. There are two more things I must warn you about.... Be prepared to have a fabulous time, and you better hold back the tears when you get the final bill on that last day. All the different fees you are gonna have to pay have been known to make grown men cry. If you check out my posts from about 1-2 weeks ago you can see the pics and info from my trip there.

I went in '08 and am planning a trip back in 2012 myself. Lot of good advice from Jensent. I do some bookings in South Africa... but sounds like you've already got an outfitter picked out. If you want to chat about what to expect and options on getting your stuff back PM me your phone #. I highly recommend Coppersmith as your logistics company to import your trophies. http://www.coppersmith.com/CSSite/cspublic.nsf/huntingFaq?OpenPage#faqb

If you've never been I suggest you book through a booking agent, like Sporting International or Blair Worldwide. You'll pay a bit more BUT they'll also book your airline and provide you with everything you need to know and down to tipping and shipping your trophies. Book through the outfitter and he'll usually either direct you to an agent ( of his choice and not yours ) or he'll expect you to know everything. Travel agents make a ton of money having you fly the routes they want you to fly. Business class IS the way to go, but like the guy said. Direct from Texas and you're going to spend a lot of time on an airplane. Chances are you'll route out of Atlanta, then to Joburg then to Windhoek. Easier way to get to Namibia is to break the trip up. Go to Germany ( Frankfurt) and overnight there. You can use airmiles and it's easier to upgrade. You'll also be in the same time zone or nearly so, therefore you can get over the jet lag a lot easier and you'll be much more rested. Take the national carrier overnight from Frankfurt, Air Namibia. Older ex Lufthansa airplanes but well maintained and much cheaper. It's also the only easy direct way into Windhoek that I know. Tell the travel agent this is the way you want to go. They probably won't like it but they'll do it. You also might look into packages, hunts of 5 to 7 days with 4 to 5 animals with prepaid trophy fees. It will keep the costs down. Hunting animals not native to Namibia like Waterbuck and Sable will be expensive and trophy quality might not be top notch. Taxidermy quality is very very good there and you might consider having it done there.

Here is a link to help with travel medical insurance: http://www.medexassist.com/?gclid=CLO6yfKW8qoCFRligwodFTRcOAYou do need it. If you want to look at emergency medivac and repatriation protection PM me and I will get you the information. Coopersmith did an excellent job for me. I would recommend talking with your taxidermist and have them help you. Bob
