Have an opportunity to go hunt a buffalo on the WRS ranch. Wondering if anyone has any feedback on them? Price is definitely right.

I shot my first buffalo (a young bull) on the WRS Ranch in 2007. The price was right.....however I would not recommend the ranch. The property was a pitiful sight.....browse lines as far as you could see, relatively thin animals, etc...

I won't go back.

been there. Shot an oryx with my rifle. Not a bad deal on price but it's a high fence hunt. It's what you make out of it. I'd use a bow for sure.

The quality (or lack-thereof) of hunt on the WRS ranch has absolutely NOTHING to do with it being high fenced. It has more to do with the fact that all the underbrush has been cleared, leaving a field of live-oaks and nothing else. The carrying capacity has also been far exceeded, so there is no natural browse or grass left.

Don't blame the fence.....

Sounds to me it's poor managment. And way over populated. Someone just wanting to turn a buck. There's more to it than that.

It's not how you fall, It's how you get up.

I would agree. I drove by the WRS the other day and am familiar with that country. We have a hunting operation just down the road. That area needs rain badly. We have been destocking and have been feeding heavily. Our animals are in great shape but it is because of the feeding.

I took my son and one of his friends to the WRS ranch in 2009. They each took a management whitetail buck and an exotic doe. It was a great hunt. The ranch looks like most of the ranches in that area of the hill country. We saw a lot of whitetails and exotics and the animals all looked to be well fed and in good shape.

I'm not blaming the fence. I was just stating that depending on the animal that you hunted it could be more or less of a hunt. I suggested going at it with a bow for the reason you stated above. The buffalo I saw never moved I'm not sure if brush would have done anything at all.

Actually.....when I was there 4 years ago the Buffalo were one of the only species on the property that would actually run from you. It wasn't an extremely difficult hunt, but they weren't tame by any means.

I hunted there this past year and had a great time. Ricky, the guide, was as nice as they come. I was there for a meat hunt. I took two sika does. It was fun. A hunt is what you make of it. It is not free range, but it was fun.If you are looking for a challenge, look for a free range hunt, but if you are interested in a harvest at a fair price, give them a try. A bow would make it much more of a challenge of course. I will go back in the future.

There are two kinds of people in this world, those who believe they can and those who believe they can't. They are both correct.

Yeah, we really enjoyed our time with him also. Hope the red deer weren't running with the zebra and axis like they were when I was there. It made for a long but fun afternoon chasing the red deer we finally got.

I was there last weekend myself, had a great time. Ricky is deff a great guy and animals seemed to be pretty decent for the conditions the area is in.

Yeah, my son took the biggest of that group of bison. Where did you get the addax? I want to get one, the prices are definitely right. Just the wrong time of the year with speedgoats, deer, pheasant, duck, and elk already planned this fall.

When we were there that zebra colt was stirring up all the animals and they were running all afternoon.

I went with Dustin at his place in Gonzales, but my luck the animal must happen to jump fence, being that its more a low fence. To me was no big deal, would love to go back soon and do some ram hunt with him as well. Wow you sound pretty busy. Ya im olanning to go to Db hunting ranch and get my addax there and may add in that wilderbeest haha. I also got turkey and deer season coming very soon. So along with my money im watching my vacation days as well.

I went to the WRS Ranch with Insight Hunting
I shot a fox and one of my uncles shot a heavy axis doe
It's a nice place...but outside of the cleaning area/walk in cooler there was a place with a bunch of rotting skulls so it smelled bad...
Yeah there wasn't that much brush but it was still a nice place

I hunted WRS in October and had a great time. Killed Gold Medal Dybowski Sika, Chocolate Fallow and real nice Axis. Yes they are not covered in grass but were feeding well. The whole hill country looks terrible this year. I don't see where management error is involved in causing a drought. The guide Ricky did a great job and worked hard to put me on the right animal. Thanks WRS
