We just found out that the high fence on our north border had a tornado hit it a couple years ago and some Elk and trophy Whitetails got out. I know in Texas an Elk is considered an exotic.
1) anyone know the Oklahoma rules for Elk?
2) if legal, would you shoot it? if you were the neighbor that had this $5k Elk get out what would you expect the neighbor to do if they saw it? I can see right after it happened giving them a call and offering them a chance to get it back. 2 years is a little long though.
if it is on your land, eating your corn, then you should be able to take it without hard feelings.

Oklahoma has an elk season, call Oklahoma department of wildlife.
We had a bunch get in our corn in the panhandle called the GR he said Oklahoma has a season....but Texas didn't.. Found out they where watering on a piece of land I owned on the Texas side. Once the crossed the line we took three of the 15 cows... The rest hauled arse headed south west. Never saw them again. But the three we took sure tasted good.

Oklahoma has an elk season, I may be mistaken, but I think I read somewhere it's for residents only. And wanna say it's by draw as well.

No... They have a drawing to hunt a few places for res and non res but on private land you can shoot them, with a licenses, and think there is a season.
Best to call oklahoma dept of wild life fore details

I thought Elk were classified as exotics in Texas and therefore could be hunted at anytime? I just heard this so, may have been BS.

In my opinion if I owned the ranch the elk came from and it had been 2 years, the chances of getting them back in the fence are slim and none. I would tell the neighbors they are fair game and good luck, all I would ask is a reasonable attempt to retrieve them just like cattle.....but its not as easy to herd something in a fence with 6' of horn on its head.

Deewayne, they also have a season for the ones that left the reservations. Aka management areas. You will have to beat down some doors for access

According to the 2011-2012 OK Hunting Guide page 9 a resident must have Hunting License/Elk License for each elk hunted and WRITTEN landowner permission to hunt elk. Page 26 an Elk hunter may hunt only on lands where they have written permission from the landowner to hunt elk. Written permission must be in possession of hunter. They do have seasons by zones.

I don't know what the regs are, but my in-laws live in Clayton, OK and they get huge elk that escape from the Pushmataha County State Game Refuge quite regularly.
Saw 6 or 7 huge bulls laying in the school's ball-field grass about 6AM one morning, right off of S2 before you hit the town.
My brother in law tells me the elk do get poached when they wander off. Those small town game wardens sure are downright unfriendly when they're on the prod.........

I have email into Oklahoma wildlife, I'm not sure my area is even in an Elk zone. Only Elk there have escaped from high fence ranches.

From the Oklahoma Hunting Regulations: that's the big question, my county isn't one of those, not anywhere even near there. I haven't seen any regulation for "other" counties.

Not 100% sure but I think if you shoot any Elk in OK you have to possess a elk permit and it has to be checked in once harvested. We had some elk wonder off some state ground last year and munched down big-time on our RIce Bran pellets in some small tree feeders. Big sucker draind the feeder and came back every day for 2 weeks I think....Ended tearing the feeder off the tree! After the run in with this huge bull elk, I talked to the game warden in that county and he said I needed a elk tag to hunt elk in the state unless in a pen.....Elk tags are DRAW only. Here is the link that shows the elk having his way with our feeder! Needless to say I was not expecting to see this on the trail camera! THe pics are at the bottom of the page.... http://www.nutradeer.com/Deer-Pics-Trailcam.php?n=30

If you aren't in one of those counties then there is no legal season for elk.

Finally heard back from Oklahoma.
I may not hunt the Elk in this county regardless of season, elk tags, and land owner permission. You may only hunt Elk in the counties listed and those regulations.
So basically every other county in the state if an Elk shows up, don't touch it! I wish Oklahoma was like Texas and all the other counties Elk were treated as exotics.

Southeast Colorado has the fun of the "planted" Kansas elk...they put them on The cimarron grasslands...they wander across the border andWHACK! Plains elk is an unlimited license in Co...as long as its season, its on!

Found your solution to you elk problem after talking with a good warden friend ..you need your land owner to apply for a crop deprivation permit.
