I have used radios to calm show calves I will try this. It seems like a good Idea. I wanted to plant some oats and wheat and peas. I was planning about a 1-3 acre plot.

The latest one that I got and am really pleased with is the small black one by Bushnell. A salesman at Cabelas told me that was all he used now and that he used several different brands and this was by far his favorite. It uses 8 double A batteries and they will last for a year. That part is impressive. The pics are good, it's small and handy and easy to operate. I paid $149.00 for one at Wally world.

I have some stealt cams and they also do a good job. They eat batteries not too badly. They take good pics and they are little bit harder to set up than the Bushnell, for me anyway.

Termites have come to the top and are eating all the buffalo grass and a lot of other goodies. Grasses and forbs are straining to put out a seed head. We need another rain soon. This heat is getting hard to deal with. Deer that I see are still hanging in there. This drought knocking out some of the fawn crop is not really going to affect our herd, but it will make a difference four years from now when we're looking for some early mature deer to harvest. What you or Mother Nature does this year, comes to pass four years from now. Either good for the mature age deer at that time, or less numbers of mature deer at that time. I'm getting ready to plow my food plots to get ready to sow my winter plots and also add some sunflowers for next season's birds. Take care. Ron.

Need some info:

Just got on a lease - last minute - just east of Winters, on CR 209 - anybody ever hunt this area of Runnels County? We have a couple hundred acres, with streams, wheat fields, and pretty good cover areas as well. I am hoping to go low key and enjoy hunting the "old fashioned" way (stalking, walking, spotting, and just chillin' by a tree!)

Just looking for some insight on this part of the world, it is a long drive for me to hunt there.

Thanks for anything you got!

RR03, that area can hold some really good deer. There may not be large numbers of deer, but they will travel long distances between the small patches of brush in that area.

Hold off of the young bucks and you can luck into a 120-140 class buck if everything works for you. On a small place like that, try not to spend a lot of time crusin all over it and see if you can get a big one to think of it as his "safe haven". Good luck, Ron

Thanks Ronman - looking for a productive dove hunt coming up here shortly as well. Maybe we will get lucky and get some migratory flights passing by as well.

RR03, We had a great opening weekend. Took over 600 whitewing off of my honeyhole. Letting it rest for awhile. Praying for a rain. Ron.

This will be my 10th year on our lease in Runnels County.
We hunt 10 miles or so east of winters.
The first 5 years went awesome. I saw some big bucks taken on our place.
Saw deer every hunt. Not uncommon for everyone to at least get a decent buck.
Then the next 5 years to present declined…it has sucked!
You are luck y to see a deer. Last year I hunted hard. Weekends, weekdays...and only saw 3 deer ALL season.
Not sure what happed.
We just upped for a new lease and also acquired some new property. Lucky me gets choice of new stand location.
In my opinion the drought, predators…not to mention the hog population has really taken a toll on this area.

Hate to leave this area because I know what it can produce. Plus side is the landowner is AWESOME. And the prices are right!
However… at some point I would LOVE to SEE a deer again. Just don’t think I want to wait around for it to recover again…

In a nut shell…Good Luck
But Runnels County has seen better days.

Hate to hear that Cowdog. I have hunted to the south of you in Concho County for the last 17 years and the last 5 years have been really good for us. We don't have any hogs though and predators have never been a problem.

Good luck on finding a new place

Cowdog, dont give up on Runnels county just yet. I know there has been a downturn in that area of the county, and it could have something to do with a healthy hog population in the area east of Winters, but, with a couple of decent rainfall years, that part of the county should rebound.

There are better numbers in most all other parts of the county. The area east and northeast of Winters has the highest population of hogs in the county and the northeast corner of the county is also a major pipeline for coyotes out of Coleman county. There have also been several sightings of mountain lions in that area over the last 3-4 years. They are major deer eaters and when they move into an area, deer usually move out or get eaten.

I can understand your heartburn, but you may want to try another part of the county. Let me know how many guns you have and what you are looking for and I'll try to help you find something.

Was up by winters this past weekend, got a bit - a dusting. But there was major rain in the area. Great wind storms too!

Been getting some very localized evening thunder boomers. No general rains since the one that came through about 6 weeks ago.

Hey hey hey, we got at least 3 inches over most of the county last night. Wheat and oats have a chance now. For a while anyway. Time to have it in the ground.

Hey, I'm starting a deer processing business about 10 miles west of Ballinger. It was formerly Windy Top Processing and it will be called Twisted Willow Processing. We will offer several products along with basic processing. 75.00 for basic and a discount if you are a THF member. Ron at www.twistedwillowhunts.com
