Zachary and I went hunting with Glenn Guess, Michelle and their daughter Leanna yesterday evening. I was pretty excited to have Zachary along because he's not always real interested in hunting, and I always like taking him along when hunting with Glenn because I know he'll have a better than average chance of seeing something! Zach was pretty pumped about going, and ready to shoot a deer or pig-whatever happened to walk out first.

We originally had set the day for Saturday, but due to a school project, we moved it to Sunday. Thanks Glenn for being flexible on that BTW!! I was kind of worried when Sunday rolled around and it was warm with high winds (20-30mph gusts) and relatively high humidity. Seems to always work that way...you pick a day but have to change it, then that day ends up being not so good! No matter, because Glenn had already picked a good spot for us that took into account the windy conditions. A great spot right inside the edge of some thick woods surrounded by a creek on one side, a road on the other, and some open fields on another. I had already mentally prepared myself for the potential of a long drag, including crossing a calf-deep creek on the way back. I didn't say anything to Zach because I didn't want any doubts or hesitation to enter his head about what the trip back out of those woods would be like!

We sat side by side against a double-trunked tree, for about 2hours-long enough for our butts to fall asleep with nothing more than some little pads to sit on!
True to conditions, the deer didn't move till just before it got dark. I knew my hearing was going but got a good reminder when Zach told me he heard a deer, then one materialized about 30yds in front of us! That deer was very small-a yearling doe I guess, and he decided after getting a close up view at 15-20yds that he didnt' want to shoot it. Later, when it was almost dark, he nudged me again and told me he could see a buck! I had already coached him on keeping his gun up on the sticks and the butt on his shoulder since the woods were thick and ranges close-he couldn't afford too much extra movement!! He told me he was gonna shoot, and I waited and waited, then-BOOM! Why does that always scare me, even when I know it's gonna happen?? LOL!

One shot, perfect placement of the .243 RemCorelokt bullet and bang-flop, venison on the ground!!

I have a friend who processes deer and Zach tells me he wants jalapeno cheese sausage, some jerky, and butterfly steaks made from the backstraps. Hey, who am I to argue, it's the kids FIRST DEER!!

A BIG thanks to Glenn for letting us come and hunt! This hunt will be something Zachary and I will always remember!
