My family owns some property 10 miles southeast of Sulphur Springs on FM69 and was wondering if anyone hunts the area and how they were doing.

My family farm is up near Sulphur Bluff...15 miles northeast of Sulphur Springs. we have had good hunting so far. Mostly does (my boy took two does during youth weekend). Seen a few bucks... some legal, but young. Need to give the young bucks a few more years to grow. 4.5 years old is the lower limit on age for my place. I have heard the hunting isn't as good down south of Sulphur Springs. Seems that out our way... there are hot spots that are better than others.

I'm up close to Camolee.. About 5 miles out of Dike but before Sulphur Bluff.

I've seen a few big boys on the side of Hwy 69 (North of I-30)during the day, and a few mid-sized bucks on the property at night, but have not taken anything yet. Lots of does but getting the bucks to come out of deep cover during the day thus far has been problematic. Weather has been pretty warm and acorns are everywhere.

It's supposed to get cool soon and I hope the rut is on or about to start out here.

Well, I'm going hunting this afternoon. Maybe the acorns are about gone and the deer will come into the feeders. With the cold front coming late today, hope the deer will get a little more active. I have been hunting for this big 10 point I've spotted a couple of times. I will let you know how things go.

I used to hunt over off of FM 269 south of 30. Killed a lot of deer over there.

Looks like that front is coming in now.. I too hope it gets them moving a bit more and me sweating in the heat less.

I'll let you know if your 10 pt'r shows up on my property; however, I cannot guarantee his safety.

Good luck!

Well, I'm back. Didn't have a lot of success deer hunting. I already have two big does in the freezer from youth weekend (my 10 year old son) so I was mainly looking for a big 8... or that 10 point. I had a big 8 point come out, but he kept a tree in between us.... and kept that tree between us until he headed off back in the woods. The deer in general have been keeping to the woods, hardly any in the fields. Lots of acorns, full moon, cold front.... equals slow hunting. Had a buddies son in a stand back in the woods.... said he saw plenty of deer, just couldn't get a shot off. I still had fun. I had over 2 or 3 hundred ducks in my duck slew (green heads).... but the cold front blew in and most moved off. I had one good hunt in there before they left though.... and they will be back. Had my buddy out to duck hunt while his kid deer hunted.... we didn't get more than 1 woody drake while he was out (late afternoon hunt... much better in the morning). But we only hunted ducks for a short while.... and fished. Another buddy was also out in the woods hunting with his daughter trying to get her first deer (trying for a doe), she shot at one but missed. Top it off with a big Turkey dinner cooked by my momma and sister (my wife was off in Houston with our 13 year old daughter who was in the HEB T-day parade)All in all, it was a good week out in the woods at the hunting cabin.
