I checked the game cameras last night and we have a buck that literally all "skin and bones" ...scary thin. He has what appears to be an enlarge sack under his chin. Is this a sign of anything? disease?
*the buck is spike/ maybe small 4 pt

I wish I had pics, but picture a deer that is "scary thin" with a sack (almost looks like a baseball puss pocket under his chin) **not sure if it is actually full of puss, but it is certainly something odd
scary thin= imagine a deer skeleton with hair

Sounds like impacted jaw to me if it looks like it like a hard knot. Like don k said it could be wormy if it looks softer.

would it be the impacted jaw causing him not to eat and be emaciated? If hes wormy,it will eventually kill him?Is the ethical thing to burn a tag and put him down if he lasts that long?

We have MLD tags. This deer will be taken if he is still alive

Coupled with the drought and the heat it could be causing him not eat as well and then allow him to also let him get worms. In drought conditions and with weak animals can have one thing wrong with them and get something else that will kill them eventually. If he is alive then you can make that decision at that time.

If you shoot a young deer because a neighbor will shoot it, you are that neighbor.

I agree with stxranchman. See what he looks like during the season and then make a decision. Deer are extremely resilient and can overcome devastating injuries and illnesses that would surely kill us. If he looks like he has promise for the future may just let him walk and let nature decide. He may just surprise you.

Tye,
thanks for the link. It tends to favor "lumpy jaw" The bad thing is, the body condition is in really bad shape. The good thing for him in the near term, he has found a protein feeder with a water source. Due to the condition of this deer and extremely poor antler characteristics, this deer is will most likely receive a MLD tag (if he makes it to October)

Lumpy jaw or impaction are usually caused by eating thorny browse, woody browse or course cedar browse that pokes a hole into the lining along the side of the jaw or underneath the tongue. As the deer continues to eat this cut continues to fill with forage. It is not very sightly or very nice smelling either. If it is this then it will usually bust open and drain out and happen again. With the buck in really bad shape I also guessing he has gotten internal parasites along with this causing his health condition to nose dive in a very bad year. Free choice feed may not be enough. Age is sometimes, but not always a factor in deer with this also.

I was floating the Guadalupe River one year with a bunch of buddies and we had a nice buck come swimming up beside us and past us. We watched him for a while and he started going under. We watched him fight it for 5 minutes and finally me and a buddy paddled over near him and grabbed an antler. When we got close we saw he was extremely skinny and had a large lump on the side of his mouth. We paddled him over to the bank and pulled him up the side. I had worked for a scientific breeder for a couple of summers so I thought I knew what I was doing. He just stood there as I opened his mouth and got the most foul smelling odor hammer me I've ever been around. I stuck my fingers in and pulled out a huge wad of green grass/weeds, and corn and some other crap. It was almost cutting off his airway there was so myuch of it. He had a loose looking jaw by the time I pulled all the junk out of it and he dropped his head and started breathing really heavy. I thought he was about to die, but with each deep breath he took his eyes started becoming more alert and his head raised higher and higher. Me and my buddy backed away and watched him for a few minutes and he became fully alert again and looked at us for a few seconds then turned and walked off under his own power. The deer might have died later, but I talked to my scientific breeder buddy and he said it probably saved the deers life from an impacted jaw and the deer probably lived. It was a neat experience and makes for a good story if nothing else.
I also tried killing a young buck acouple of years ago with my bow that had tumors all over his face. He had one hanging from his chin that was the size of a baseball. I never got him and he might have died on his own. But it was a messed up looking face. I think I've got game cam pictures of him somewhere, I will have to post.
