Academy has these for $179. Does anyone have experience with these?

I've looked at them too. i beleive they come in 30-06 (seen alot of these) 243 (alot of these too) .308 (not nearly as many) 7mm (alot of them too) and i think 22-25 or 22-250? one of those....the Academy in Plano had several of the 30-06 and 243....hope this helps

The maverick 88 is only available in 12 or 20. For $100 its a decent shotgun that feels pretty cheap that will get the job done and backed by a respected manufacture.
But for $180 I'd throw in $20 more and get a used 870. Think you are getting more shotgun with a used 870 than a new 88.

They are a good gun. The furniture feels a little cheap but everything else is great. I have a SBS built of an 88 and it has taken a lot of abuse without any problems.

i had the model 91 (magnum) for 8 years without a single problem. however, i do agree that it would be better to spend a little more for the 870. but if your budget is 180, buy it.

The M88 is a shotgun. I'm referring to the new rifle line. The Academy in town has them in .30-06, .243 and .308.

I work at academy part time and we've been selling quite a bit of them. In Round Rock we carry the .30-06, .270 and .243

I just grabbed one in .243 from the Lewisville store. Incredible deal, for a brand new gun, for under $200, IMO. This one will work nicely, for my daughter and wife. They like to shoot (not hunt so much), but my .30cal's just beat them up too much. Ad doesn't have much detail - but these are 22" bbl and black synth stock, matte finish on bbl. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the ones I held (and bought) feels like full-length stock - (42" overall) not a youth or shortened one (they had that one there too - 20" bbl and butt-extensions, but not on sale). From what I've read, these are pretty good shooters - will report back after glass-mounted and range trip. Also, after reading up, this .243 should 2nd as a varmint/pig rifle for *me* ! FYI - the Lewisville store ALSO had these in .270 and 30-06 . $179 - that's just an incredible deal for a *new* centerfire! Big thumbs up to the guys at Academy - great to work with!

Bought my son one last year. Youth model in .243 that came with spacers you can remove to shorten the stock. After a season with it, I wouldn't buy it again.
I didn't expect a silky smooth action, but I did expect a rifle that would feed properly and not bind up. My Savage 110 is a better rifle. I'm a fan of inexpensive utility rifles, but they have to work.
