lol thanks but by the the season is almost over Well I was just trying to get as close to the rut as I could . You might have to make an early season scouting trip by taking your girlfriend to visit her Grandfather. Check out this site and click on the entry photos tab and category standings on the side bar and then find Region 2 to see what type of deer are being taken in that county. They also have a link on another page to the season before last. http://www.texasbiggameawards.org/index.htm

Oldham county has some huge Mule Deer. TBGA Top Five of All-Time lists #2 as a 191 6/8" net typical from there. I've mounted deer that measured 220" gross non-typical. If your girlfriends grandpa's ranch adjoins any of the ranches I do work for, you have a chance for a trophy. The Mule Deer rut after the season closes so I would target the tail end of the season. Good Luck.

Huge mule deer up there. My dad and I used to lease 23,000 acres north of Adrian back in the day. I shot one that was #3 in the region typical that year in the TBGA. I can't remember what year that was, I think 97 or so. He was a big symmetrical 5X5 and was around 28" wide. Huge body, like around 260 lbs dressed weight. I put 5 rounds from my 7 mm rem mag in him to bring him down! One in the gut, one in the leg and three in the chest!
We hunted there for a few years and saw many bigger bucks, but it is so wide open in those sagebrush hills that it is sometimes hard to get close enough.
The closer you are to the Canadian river the better.
