Has the cost of land gotten any cheaper? We bought our raw land for $500/acre in 1989. Now it's worth about 2-3K and acre with improvements...maybe more??? It's called inflation. Back in 1989 we leased 2000 acres in commanche cty. for $5/acre. What's it going for now? 3X that amount? Doubt it. People complain about the price of access to a piece of property for hunting. Those that complain, do you own land? Just figure the amount of money it cost to buy 600 acres low fenced. At $1500/acre it would cost you $900,000. If you owned that land, what would you charge to allow a complete stranger onto it year round?

I don't think people have the extra money to spend like they did in the 80's. Cell phones, a new gadget every time one comes out, kids that want every thing their friends have, plus cost of gas, food taxes etc. Also back then most our hunters were brought by companies. Colt firearms and crew boat companies out of La. is where we got most of out hunters.

I agree don. I have some good friends that live in the metroplex. It is a very status quo lifestyle. They drive megahuge diesel 4wd pickups, boat slips with fish/ski boats and if one buys a 40 ft camper the next will buy a 42 ft.

Good folks all, they work hard and play harder. Way to busy a lifestyle for me. Fun to visit. Every weekend an adventure!

Before this is all over you may be lucky you got the $750.I think this year a lot of people are going to lose money on deer hunts. I hope I am wrong.

I remember my dad paying $750 for a lease south of McCamey along the Pecos, now you would be lucky to get it for less than $1500.

What hunting has reached it what is called the price point, where people choose an alternative.

Same with a lot of other things as well. Like Golf. I went by a very nice "economical" course yesterday in Glen Rose while coming back from a horse show. It was the "cool" part of the evening and I saw "0" people on the course. That particular course cost around $40 for 4 hours of entertainment. People are just holding onto the money they have left.

Essentially with the price of fuel etc, we are really looking at about a 10% inflation rate per annum. It's pretty easy to figure out that Betty Sue is going to be cutting out something and it's not the grocery bills .if Bubba keeps going hunting

Its really not that difficult... two peoples meals cost close to $18 at mcdonalds.

Wonder how much money some one can save by not eating out or even cutting out half of their eating out.

And hunting prices have not risen the same as other goods and services. Be glad that hunt prices have not mirror land prices to the same percentage .

Taking an animal on some of these large "High fenced" ranches is usually harder than taking an animal on a low fenced place that they feed the deer up to.

If that is true Don, then thats not very good advertising for your business.

BOBO it's thak kind of thinking that got us into the present fiscal mess. There is ultimately a limit to cutting and that point has been met, otherwise the numbers of hunters wouldn't be declining.

In the late 80`s and thru the 90`s we paid $1-$2 per acre for our lease in Collingsworth county. Now it is $10-$12 an acre.

And now our area is over run with hunters.

What's it cost to hunt public land? You don't have to have a private lease to hunt

Guys like you look at hunting as it should be open range and access for every one...
Sorry but the price of hunting has not gone up that much... compared to other things. Guess you also feel everyone should have a flat screen tv and free tickets to the baseball game

Here's what indisuptable BOBO despite your mouth. The price of hunting has gone up enough to drive more and more hunters out of the sport with fewer and fewer younger ones.

So has the price of baseball game tickets....

There are always cheaper options but apparently that's not good enough for you...Some people would not go to a minor league game even though the can afford it
since its not a major league...even though they can't afford the major league stadiums

Something like 1.5 million plus public hunting land in TX. Not to mention there are some cheap leases out there also.... whats wrong with those options??

As far as my mouth... I can't stand people that despise other peoples abilities...also can't stand people who come on to a TX hunting forum and do nothing but talk smack about the things that make tx..tx, such as tx's strong private land ownership and its hunting...

I'm sure there is an african safari forum some where.

Nothing BOBO, except the line for the Dallas Cowboy ticket waiting list is still long. I repeat, hunting numbers are declining and the bulk of them are now older with fewer younger replacment hunters being created. Whatever is happening ( we all have our opinion and some are better than others ) is not working. The price point on hunting has now changed to shooting sports without the hunting or just going overseas. Where the trouble will really begin is when the tax revenues start to fall. Revenues for hunting peaked in 2005 and have begun to fall each year since. What do you think is going to happen in this economy?
