Does she have any experience with handguns? My wife has had 3 different pistols since we got married, all by her choosing. She started out with a 4" S&W 65, but did not like the weight. She then switched to a Bersa Thunder, but got rid of it because she wasn't comfortable with an automatic. She finally settled on a Taurus 605 with Crimson Trace grips.
Try to steer her away from ultracompact handguns (Ruger LCP, little Berettas, etc), they are very difficult to shoot well and generally tend to kick like pee. I would try to let her shoot one of each of the following and see what she feels the most comfortable with.
K or L frame S&W revolver (or similar) loaded with .38 Spl. I really love 2" model 65's
J frame size revolver, specifically the S&W 60
Glock 19 or similar (Springfield XD, Kahr K9, Taurus Millenium Pro)
If she's not an experienced shooter then I would shy away from anything with an external hammer/safety.
I really REALLY like Crimson Trace grips. I have them on both mine and my wife's primary guns. They activate instinctively and let you know exactly where the projectile will go, even if you're shooting out of position, can't see your sights, are disoriented, etc.

J frame size revolver, specifically the S&W 60 This is what my wife has and she really likes it, fits her hand very well.. My G23's grip was too big for her fingers to wrap around comfortably and the little 'boot grip' J-frames were too small.. Model 60 was just right..
I really hate to do what I am about to do, because it will be very painful for you.

Introduce her to revolvers, then on to Semi-Autos.
Let her try a J-Frame for fit, but she might like a G19 more.
Just depends on the woman really.

My bride to be now has a S&w 642 38 special that she likes slot. She had a Ruger SR9 before someone stole it. Either way let her handle as many guns as possible and let her choose.

Take your wife to every place that sells guns you can find, have her handle many different firearms.
Have her look at revolvers to she if she feels comfortable with how the grip is and how it feels in her hand, have her try many semi-autos again paying close attention to how the gun feels to her if she finds a semi-auto she likes then make sure she can operate the firearm appropriately Manipulate the slide, Reach safety/de-cocker if it has one, operate the mag release and so forth.
Once she has narrowed it down to a couple models she really likes, take her to a range that rents those guns and let her try and fire them to see if she still likes them, or the idea of a gun anymore.
If she does not like the idea of a GUN don't force her to have one, there are many different options of defense that a firearms, pepper-spray, tasers and so forth.
Next if she does not have any formal training with guns get her enrolled in a beginners course that is tailored towards women IE no men in the class and preferably a women instructor. DO not try and train her yourself generally causes problems as couples know all to well how to punch each others buttons and that does nothing to help get her up to speed.

Any woman can shoot a 9mm and can be taught in an afternoon to be competent enough to fight the weapon. If there are no kids involved a Glock 19 represents your best bet and the 4th generation pistol solves any grip problems you may have. Excellent price, reliable, accurate and high capacity with a more than adequate cartridge. You will need a holster for it for safety. If you have kid around then the Smith and Wesson M&P compact variant in 9mm with the safety and magazine disconnect. It may take a bit more training but is a much safer weapon to have around. Keep it simple and the double action only of both of these types is the way to go. When given a choice more female LEO's choose the Glock 19 than any other handgun.

My wife is 5' and 97 lbs. She's deadly with her Glock 26 in 9mm.

Nothing wrong with that and the only way to learn is to ask questions. If you want to keep this simple from the inception, buy a quality .22 double action revolver. No recoil. No jams. This will allow you to practice, practice, practice and then practice some more and not break your piggy bank in the process. Make sure both of you have adequate eye/ear protection/always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, and enjoy your time together on the range.

As some others have said, I would try a revolver first. If you get an auto make sure she can charge the weapon before you buy it. Alot of women can't charge a Glock 26, my wife has difficulty on some of these smaller auto's.

My wife had trouble with the operation of a semi pistol. I pulled it out after a few months and she had no ideat what to do. So I got her something that will go bang when she pulls the trigger - SS Ruger GP 100 in 357/38. Pratice & load with 38's. She loves it.

There is a nice Smith and Wesson model 15 4" .38 Special revolver on the for sale forum. Load it with light target loads to practice and a 158 grain lead semi-wadcutter hollowpoint for self defense.

Taught my girlfriend how to shoot with my Glock 27 (.40).
She passed her CHL with it and has since bought herself a Kimber Stainless Ultra Carry II (.45).

Where do you live? I hate lonestar guns and ammo in weatherford but they have an enormous selection of popular pistols you can rent to shoot at their indoor range. Take her there and let her try
