We dropped to 16% during drought and our consumption went up. Did a little test and put 20 back out next month, went back down, so stayed with 16% til we got rain. Consumption went up cuz its not "burning" them like 20%...per biologist(s) but everyone has their own idea of what works and what dont. So stick with what works for you is my advice. Or it could be that consumption went down on 20% because it is higher protein. x2 if they are getting some browse of any type along with it they are getting more protein in the 20% in less bites. This is what I have seen happen. I fed 24% and it dropped even a little more, but you have to have some source of fiber to go with the protein.

Yep,I checked the cameras and the 1350lb. protein feeder and also found the feed hadn't been touched much, since we refilled about 2 weeks ago. Prior to this trip, they had been slamming the protein. (Dewitt Co)
And YES, I noticed the Mesquite beans/pods all over the ground. So,maybe this is why the protein consumption rate is down. I wouldn't have thought this, if not for this thread !
Thanks

I am oposite hear in east texas I use a 26 percent protein box made by PF feeds and was putting one out at 17 different feeders that we run year round and they were lasting about a month. now if I get 2 full wks out of one I am lucky its more like every wk and a half I am putting new ones out,I will say we are past extremely dry here the goat weeds are even wilted

I've noticed a slow down in my feeders also, I too feed 20%. Lots of Mesguite beans on the ground and in the trees. I've got plenty of water on the ranch and my 3 protein feeders are by a good water source. Reckon I'll just keep feeding the 20% and see what happens.

Not when they go from eating 50lbs in one month then 400 in the next two weeks...
