I have never used a set but I would like to. My reservation is that peep sights usually only work well if the peep is close to your eye, not arms length away. Plus, the rear sight is going to cover up a lot of the target at longer ranges.

Are you talking about self defense or hunting?
I don't care for them on pistols. For me, they work closer to the eye like on my Marlin rifle.

Plus, the rear sight is going to cover up a lot of the target at longer ranges. Thats a good point. Seems to me that it would be more natural for most ppl to use the regular sights then try to line those up.

If you use ghost rings close to the eye the rear sight covers NONE of the target at any range. Nothing is more natural than a ghost sight. The problem is unless you train yourself, most folks have the tendency to focus on the rear ghost ring the further it is from the eye.
If you remember that ghost or peeps operate naturally by the amount of light in the ring naturally centering the front sight you'll realize quickly upon use indoors or lower light situations that spaces or obstructions do create a shadow or darkspot and can throw the whole thing (theory) out of whack.
I think self defense pistols should stay with the tri or bigdot.

I just put a set on a Glock for a guy, they are not your traditional Ghost ring sights.
The ghost ring the inner diameter of the peep was almost 1/4 of an inch, the front was a standard width sight just a little taller. I did not get to shoot the gun but walking around the shop it was easy to move from target to target with.
I don't think they would work to well on a defensive gun, but rather a competition gun.

Kinda dumb IMO. Focus on the front sight, don't worry about the rear.
A ghost ring on a pistol= clownshoes...
