Billy Powell tried to stop the slaughter. The 77-year-old East Texan hired a lawyer and sued in federal court, claiming the government's liquidation of 331 white-tailed deer -- valued at more than $1 million -- would violate his civil rights by depriving him of due process. But on May 11, 15 years of painstaking breeding was destroyed, work that had earned Powell a reputation for creating some of the state's biggest trophy deer, like Fat Boy, aka Barry, whose amazing rack measured 440 on the Boone and Crockett antler scale used by hunters. "They killed every deer I had," Powell told the Star-Telegram. "They gave them a shot to relax, then killed them with a bolt gun. I offered to turn them out in the wild. Cherokee County could have been the most sought-after county for hunting deer, and I wanted to donate an albino doe to [Tyler's] Caldwell Zoo. ... They said the deer might be carrying disease. ... But every deer I got came from certified herds with better health records than they have in Texas." State and federal officials say Powell is far from the victim in this case. Greed got the best of him and now he wants to cry about it!

Billy Powell brought deer in from other states illegally. The deer were not quarantined or examined by Texas authorities. It's just like confiscation and disposal of fruits and vegetables by customs. He could easily have infected native deer with wasting disease or other illneses. He got was he deserved.

Not good. Most breeders do it the lawful way, but it only takes a few cases like this to give the industry a black eye.

He was wrong and did not get what he deserved IMO. The deer did not deserve the death sentence but TPWD hands were tied and did what they had to do. This post is only part of the article that was written. BMD is right there is a lot more to this story and if the public new it, it would really make them angry.

I don't understand how the guy can blatantly break the law and then whine about his rights when the laws are enforced! The sad thing is that the deer were/are put down
I'd ask him if he's pregnant. He missed a s__tload of periods. I'll take "things that look like a uterus" for $200 Alex.

I think killing them is I also think there is 2sides to this story and the public is hearing one. He broke the law he is paying his fines and will do his probation but killing the deer YOU SIR ARE IGNORANT! So what is the other side of the story? since you seem to know more than your telling? just one deer in that heard with CWD would have DEVASTATED the WT population here in Texas! do you remember they killed over 150 thousand whitetail deer up north just to try and stop it? and it did NOT WORK! This A$$hole broke the law and he deserves everything they throw at him! The really sad part is there are probably other breeders here in Texas & Oklahoma that are smuggling in semen straws from states like Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, North Carolina & South Carolina so this will not be the last time TPWD or the OWLD will take possession of a breeder's stock and euthanize them. GREED will be the downfall of mankind.....

GREED will be the downfall of mankind..... You need to do some more current research on CWD and find out some things about it. When did it become illegal to bring semen into Texas? (edit: there is an article in the June/July 2011 TTHA magazine on page 180 that adds some insight into the CWD issue, very good read. By the way the article states that is was over 100,000 deer killed in Wisconsin and less than 1% were affected by CWD. They also stated that wildlife leaders predicted that at that time in 20 years the population in Wisconsin would be wiped out by CWD. Today there are more deer in Wisconsin post slaughter than before.)

they need to come up with alternative solutions when deer herds have been checked out as healthy from out-of-state breeders.. he needs to address the semen thing via civil suit to cover his fines. It's not fair to legit breeder operations, but semen tied to TX deer is not in context, "connected with illegal activities".

If everybody actually hunted for wild deer instead of some just wanting to shoot penned deer for the bone on their heads none of this would be an issue. Just sayin'....

Mr.Powell is not a bad guy, did he make some decisions that crossed the line, sure he did. Everyone on this forum knows I don't like hf whitetail the man has paid for his mistake and paid alot, there was no reason to kill the deer they were in a pen the state was in control and they could have monitored them, and then released or placed in zoo for all I care, no different than killing Anderton's deer, none of those diseased. They knew the heard was healthy and last time I checked it was illegal to kill a wt out of season in a pen or not, just more big brother bs flexing their muscle cause they can, they knew before any of the deer on either ranch were killed that they did not have cwd.
