How often can you get to it to re-fill? Will it be in a feed pen? If only deer are watering then you would enough water for about 5-7 deer for a week including birds and evaporation. If you could leave the drum as is, make a 2x4 stand to set it in and run a short piece of black washing machine hose from it and attach a small water trough float and a smaller water trough then you would loose less to evaporation. I would only do this in a good feed pen as cattle and hogs will empty or dump it over the first time they get to it.

We have some 40 gallon tubbs that we have been putting water out at our feeders, they are not in a feed pen and last about 3 weeks. We have pics of deer hogs yotes turkey and buzards drinking out of it too. When the tubs get down to the last couple inches the hogs do knock them over.

Before I put the feed pen around my feeders, the hogs would mess up the water tub (large black molasses tubs, I guess, from TSC) every single night.
Now with it inside the feed pen, birds, squirrels, deer, turkey are the only ones getting to it.

Also check out this months issue of the Texas Trophy Hunters Magazine as Dr. Kroll has an article on water sources and solutions to it on hunting land.

we have (4) 330 gallon totes with a 1-2 gallon pail with float switch on it. They tote is on the outside of the hog panel pen with the actual pan sits on the inside of the panel. 10 feet from a 3k protein feeder. we also have a mineral block about 4-6 feet from the water
the tote can be purchased for about $100 (on avg), it needs a 2" to 3/4" screw on adapter + the pail + float is about $25 (Tractor Supply)

Well, just got back from the lease and got some pics of the water station that we set up, and my hubby refilling it. The bottom tank holds 392 gallons, and the plastic tote holds 400 gallons. First, we get the bottom tank up to level This pic shows most of the setup You can see from this angle how the tote is plumbed into the float underneath. Here's the pump dohopper he rigged up to get the water from the tote in the back of the truck into the tote over the water tank. It runs off a car battery.
The early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

I just recently put out a 20 gallon tank that I haul every weekend with 5-gallon water bottles. They are light, haul without spilling and easy to use anddill-up. It's in a feeder pen and has a cinder block in it for the poor-swimming rats.

Only thing I might suggest is coming off of the drain on the large trough with another smaller or shorter trough for the fawns to drink from. They can't reach the water in the big trough.

Good point! Guess we'll have to settle for the hogs drinking too, if it means helping out the fawns.

That looks a lot like our rig for washing dishes etc. only your deer waterer is nicer. What does that say about the sanitary conditions of our camp?

Look on Craigs list for totes. I have two phone numbers in my file that are listed as totes for sale. I will PM them to ya. That's a pretty nice watering set up. Once we used a 750 gl tank to feed several water troughs. We would turn on the generator and fill the tank up with our well. Then we used 1 1/2 pvc pipe to the troughs with float valves. That worked well and would last over a month. We raise deer now and enjoy it.

Jrkennemer, I don't know who gave my hubby the totes, but he got them for free from someone he knows. They came mounted on those wooden pallets, so he just left them that way. That sure makes it nice sliding the one in/out of the truck bed.
