Just got on a new lease in Dilley and the senderos are real tight. Took my truck out there the first time I looked at it and put enough scratches down the side to make me want to get a hunting rig. I've been looking for a used mule or something similar. Then it occured to me to just buy and old bronco/jeep etc. and fix it up. what do ya'll think is the best way to go? Not looking to put any more redneck pinstripes on my truck.

If only those boots had a gun rack, beer cooler, and a spotlight...then I'd consider walking.

I can't justify spending that kind of money on a ranger, mule or others when that kind of money would buy a good 4x4 truck with heat and ac that will keep you dry in the rain, and clean when it's muddy. That's just assuming your budget is that high.
I would look at a truck, suburban, jeep bronco/ blazer and customize it for your needs.

Yeah just get an older 4X4 truck and it will cost you less and serve you better. I don't get those little buggies everyone seems to have now-a-days. You can buy a truck, and put a blind or seats in the back of it for less than one of those rangers.

I have a Ranger, and it's kind of difficult to describe the attraction. In the year that I've had it, I've taken it just about everywhere my 4-wheelers have gone, and been able to haul 2 other persons and stuff on it. Did a few over the weekend trips to the Red River Trails for some long distance trail riding along with friends that have 4 wheelers. I ended up hauling everyone's extra gear and never had an issue. Sure, you can get a Jeep or truck for less, it just depends on what it's used for. I still want to build a special purpose Wrangler or CJ, though...

You can get a Kawasaki Mule 610 for pretty reasonable. Upkeep on one of these would be way less than buying an old 4x4.

Used to have an old jeep. It spent more time in the shop than at the ranch. Bought a John Deere Gator about 10 years ago. Never spent any money on it except gas, oil, airfilters, tire sealant and tires. It's got 1500 hours on it and is still running like a top.

Upkeep and maintenance has been lower on my Mule than it has ever been on any "older 4x4" truck I've owned or own now. Plus, the Mule can carry all the protein, corn, etc I need anywhere on my place- when it's wet or dry and it doesn't destroy the roads like a heavy truck.

The great thing about a truck or The Beast like mine is when the weather gets bad you can get inside and stay out of the cold

Just use your truck. For 6K you can get your truck buffed about 100 times. Why did you get a truck in the first place? That [censored]'ll buff out.

All my tools are in my truck and its dependable etc.. Scratches do suck but its truck. Take care of it and use it for what it’s for. I have a 4 wheeler but find my self leaving it home more and more.

It all depends. An ATV or side by side will go places a truck or suburban won't. Some folks need that, some don't.

Depends on the individual situation. Using your truck on the ranch/lease might be best in your situation, but not for others

Ya, I get it. Personally, I did't buy a truck because I like getting 15 mpg, 8 ply tires or folks seeing me in a truck. I buy it because I use it as a tool. Pull a boat, load corn, fill feeders, haul fire wood, get around the deer lease, etc. I understand having a 4 wheeler or a different atv for certain needs. The original post was because he didn't want scratches on his truck, not because he couldn't get through it. It's silly to me to spend 40 G's on a 4x4 truck and then spend 14 G's on an atv so you can get to the lease and get in the atv. Why not just get a car to get you to your atv? Now, if you're hunting quail and have 8 dogs, put a 4 hole dogbox on the back of a Mule and cover as much ground as you can.
Different strokes for different folks, just my opinion.

And you've got heat/ac in your truck. Just another bonus.

My 2002 f-150 with 125,000 miles has never had any issues at all. I can take it anywhere on my lease, carry way more equipment or corn than a mule/ranger could, stay warm in the cold or cool in the heat, and can run over small mesquites if I need to with my brush guard. Plus I can drive it on the highway and tow a boat with it.

It all depends on the lease your on in my opinion, cause down here in southeasttexas you cant get a truck to go down the roads and trails I drive. Four Wheelers are the way to go here, but in that country being more open and straighter trails Id say a truck or something like it, because riding on a utv or atv when its 30 degrees and raining sucks big time. Plus no matter what they advertise they cant haul what a truck hauls.

Jolene has been trail ridden extensively. She is quite, gentle and stands to mount. She has a nice ground covering walk, a little trail gait. She lopes, stops, backs up. Jolene should fit most any level rider. She has a sweet disposition, clips, loads and hauls great. $2750. Don’t miss her

Trust me I dont baby my truck. but its more of a family vehicle and not suited for full time hunting. The place I'm on is not like my old place. It has senderos that are super tight and its south Texas. The brush there is no joke. I dont mind buffing out a scratch or two but I'm not going to tear up my vehicle and ruin the resale value when I can buy something else that'll end up costing me less money in the end.
