I was wondering if anybody knows when the rut might be ought in the Coleman/Abilene area? If so, how is that determined? Just curious.

I had a guy this weekend out in Runnels County tell me that they thought the rut may be starting within the next couple of weeks. Seems awful early to me, but what do I know!!!

i used to hunt north of ballinger and south west of cross plains. opening weekend used to have lots of pre-rut activity. one year we had a nice cold front come through the 2nd weekend of the general season and the big bucks were chasing does. on those 2 places, hunting was the best from opening weekend - Thanksgiving. it was really slow the rest of the season until the very last weekend.

We must have talked to the same guy. Was he at B&B feeds near Crews? He said something about the double full moon this month and the rut should start between the 28th and the 4th...something like that? I have hunted every weekend this month and have not seen one trace of pre rut chase or anything. Who knows.

We are south of you on hwy 382 and the smaller bucks were still grouped up together. I did notice a change in the deer activity at the two places we monitor with cameras. We are seeing alot more does and less bucks so something is changing. I also noticed that there was a distinct freeze line on the mesquite trees. Above 5' were yellow and falling and below 5' were as green as possible. Little minds are amszed at little things.

Nothing much going on like that around the Pitchfork. Just a couple little bucks rubbing antlers together for a sec.

well for my part of Coleman county, there hasnt been a freeze yet but its been nice & chilly...usually AFTER thanksgiving it starts to pick up, they are still more apt to eat up the rest of the acorns in this area before heading to the feeders, the younger bucks are starting to get alil frisky but the big boys arnt just yet

Two years ago, I talked to a Game Warden in Mitchell County (approx 1 hour west of Abilene).
He said that peak rut is 'generally' around the middle of November.
So I agree with the other folks with the rut being mid till end of Nov.
I'll be hunt'n there a few days before and after Thanksgiving.

I gave up Hunt'n + Fish'n...It was the worst 15 Minutes of My Life!!

I'm in the Eastland area and have noticed pre rut behavior for the last 2 weekends. The buck we killed last week, which was 5.5, was chasing does. I also saw 3 bucks fighting last saturday. I think the rut will be here earlier than normal with the range conditions.

I'm like Tye, we've been seeing prerut activity for two weeks now. I watched a 2 1/2 year old run over and piss on a scrape that a 4 1/2 year old buck had just cleaned off and pissed on. The older buck ran over to the young buck and the fight was on. The older buck had the young buck on the ground and putting a big whopping on him. Last seen, the old buck was right on the youngsters butt, chasing him out of the area. They were trying to compete for a yearly doe that was coming into cycle and was flirting around with both of them.

The young bucks are running the dry does right now. We have some game cam pics with some bucks up to 3 1/2 years old with dark hocks.

My opinion is that the wet does should come in around the 16th to 20th of November. This is adding 30 days from the dry does cycling that we've watched.

By the way, our ranch is about 14 miles North of Coleman, on the banks of Lake Coleman.

It seems early but it usually isn't as late as thought. Saw a nice basket-8 this A.M. south of Breckenridge with a thick neck on him - wouldn't you know it, he was with a doe. It just might be kicking off next weekend - at least pre-rut....oh, is that the first weekend of November????

Novemberyet..... You didn't mention a fawn with the doe, so I assume it's a dry doe. Like I was saying, the dry does are coming in right now. The does with fawns should be the middle of November.

MaggieMTx... we love that country... it has some heavy shinery brush draws, some steep draws and some open country that was chained back in the 60's. we bought the ranch in 70 or 71 and have been extensively game managing it for over 10 years now. Just wish our neighbors did the same!! It's hard to pass on a great 4 1/2 year old that you know is hanging around the perimeter of our ranch and also knowing the neighbors will shoot him in a heartbeat. The biologists have told us that all we're doing is growing big bucks for our neighbors. We protein feed a lot, but put the feeders in the center of the ranch to make the deer get used to being in the center and not on the perimiter of the ranch.
