We moved into our house late last Summer. This Spring, I have been trying to get the yard looking good (previous owners didn't take care of anything). All is looking good except the side yard seems to have a chigger problem. I have sprayed with Ortho, put down triazaside granules, triazaside spray and cut the grass short. I think part of the problem is also my neighbor doesn't take care of his yard and they may be coming through the wooden fence.

Any thoughts on how to keep the chiigers out? So far I am the only one in tha family who has gotten much exposure to them (they got me good) but the 3 year old does have a few bites.

Thanks for all your help! Will

Chiggers are mites and are closely related to ticks. Go to a garden store or home center and look for granules or spray containing FIPERONIL (read the fine print regarding the active ingredients), which is also in Frontline for your dog.

Fiperonil is very safe around children and pets and will put the big hurt on chiggers for many months.

x2

The only good way I have found to kill chiggers once they are on your body is to put a cap full of bleach in a shallow bath 3-4" and dive in. Back in the day my grandfather would fill up a burlap sack full of sulfer and drag it behind his lawn mower to cut down on chiggers.

believe me you dont want to go through that

Broadcast granulated sulfur and that should do the trick.

10/4 on the sulfer, it works for chiggers/fleas/ticks. Only other thing I know of that definately works is a poison called Durasban & it was outlawed years ago. On the bleach bath...I got ate up with chiggers so bad one summer on a ram hunt in the hill country I didn't know what to do, they were all over me & spreading like crazy. I tried Chigger Ex, finger nail polish, rubbing alchohol, peroxide, you name it. Then tried the bleach bath, only problem for me was I was itching soooo bad I put WAY more than a cap full of bleach in the tub & ran the water as hot as I could stand it. Filled the tub enough to cover my body, turned on the exhaust fan and got in. Did I mention I put in ALOT of bleach lol! It about killed me I think, got dizzy & couldn't stand on my own had to crawl out of the tub on my stomach & into the hall so I could get some air. Not one of my best ideas but was willing to do anything to stop the itching. The bleach may work but didn't work for me. I don't think I stayed in the tub long enough though who knows? Itching continued for a few more days. I've learned since then when I'm in those parts in the summer time take some preventitive measures & wear rubber boots with your pants tucked in. Try not to get down on your knees stalking & waiting for a shot. Squat or stand up behind a tree, anything but crawling around in chigger country lol! Of course the use of non scented bug spray helps too. Just my .02

I need this answer, too. I get eaten up this time of year when I go to the lease.

Sevin-5 5% dust, Fill a tube sock half full with it, tie a knot in the end of the sock and dust your boots, socks and your pants legs up to the knees. I also dust my fly and waist band just for good measure. I keep a sock full of Sevin in a zip log bag in the bed of my Rhino and one in the toolbox of my truck.
Me and my huntging buddies have been using it for 20 + years and we never get chiggers or ticks when we use it. You can buy it at Tractor Supply, Home Depot, Lowes etc.

Soon there will be some dooms-day prophet on here telling you if you use this stuff body parts will start falling off but I am 63 years old and all equipment is still in tact and functional.

As far as the boots, I like the knee hi Lacrosse rubber boots that have the strap on top you can tighten up. I've never sprayed anything on the rubber boots as they don't need any from my experience but you can if you'd like. The rubber boots also leave no scent behind which I like especially for bow hunting & scouting. As far as the sulfer, that is just for pest control at the house. You can buy bags or jugs of granulated sulfer or dust at most local feed stores. It doesn't kill them but keeps them away, don't know what it is about it but it works. You can broadcast it or throw it by hand. For bug spray, I can't remember the brand now but I buy it at Academy.

Good advise! I did however learn something about bug spray. We often trap pigs at our place & sometimes they are infested with ticks, (especially when weather is warm). Before I go to work cleaning them I soak my arms downs good with Off & spray on my clothes. Last time I did this, as soon as I soaked my arms down & was ready to start cutting I realized that I still had my phone on my waist. Went to put my phone away in my truck, (have a suction cup phone holder on the inside of my windshield), I rested my arm on my dashboard to do this & the mosquito spray from my arm ate the plastic fisish off of my dashboard, pretty ugly now. Makes you wonder what that stuff really does to your skin.....
