Looking to mount a scope on a Traditions .50 cal caplock synthetic stocked "Deerhunter" model rifle.

What brand and model black powder scopes would you recommend or advise against?

Would you go fixed or variable? What do you consider a good range expectation for .50 caliber with scope(this is based on the rifle/caliberand scope and not considering the shooter's skill)for whitetail or even mule deer.

Thanks in advance.

I saw a bunch of scopes at Cabela's that are designed specifically for black powder guns. While I was looking at them, another customer said that he had one of the Cabela's brand scopes and it's lasted 2 or 3 years with no problems. I'm thinking about getting a scope for one of my BP rifles, so I'm interested in other peoples' experiences, too.

I use various 3X9 scopes, in Leupold and Nikon. You really don't need a scope "made for BP".

While I understand what Ot is saying I would also say right tool for the right job. I have the Nikon Omega 3-9x40 BDC 300 on my .50 cal T/C and behind 150 gr. of pyrodex it flat out shoots 1.5 in. at 100 yards. I was surprised as all get out and immediately sold. Here's a pic of a buddy of mine from Australia shooting it and he was also amazed and wished we had a longer distance to shoot. I like the added magnification of the 3-9 and using Nikon's Spot On ballistic Match Technology Program which works great for BP, I can really dial in at distance.
Any questions please feel free to drop me a PM

Longtime hunter/shooter/fisherman who loves being outdoors. I used to hunt/compete with my son, but he's now stationed in Germany. Never enough time.
