The Lone Star Bowhunters Association (LSBA) has a data base for Texas Bowhunting and Bowfishing Records. We were discussing the shrinkage difference between green score and 60 day score. Pope and Young requires 60 day drying before final score can be recorded. Does anyone have any facts or references that can be used to document the shrinkage? We currently require 60 day waiting period before horned animals can be entered and we are considering if we should waive that, especially for exotics. However, if your animal appears to be in the top 10, the final score would require the 60 day waiting period. We are seeking options to increase entries into our record system and the 60 day wait appears to be a barrier for some folks.
Secondly, Pope and Young also require 10% deduction for horned animals in velvet, which can happen during archery season for some animals and exotics. 10% seems a little high. What is your experience with animals in velvet?
I look forward to your response.

10% deduction on total score, or 10% deduction on mass?
if that is total score, I'd say that is way high....figure the thickness of the velvet, and the length of a beam or tine...
1/8" thick velvet is going to add 10% to tine that is 10 inches long?

For velvet scores I have found that most whitetail deer will loose about 3%-4% from the gross in velvet to the hard horn score. Some will be a shade more and a few might be less but that is the average that I go buy. The difference between a green score and the 60 day period in my experience has been mainly in the inside spread shrinking up. So it might be from 1/8 to 1/2 inch difference in the 2 scores if there is any difference at all. Not enough experience scoring horned exotics to say if they shrink or not.

That drying is a real biotch!

Nothing wrong with shooting a Coues Deer. Man he was a great at converting feed to inches of anlters then with 38 lb body and 132 inches of antlers. Just imagine what he would look like if he weighed 100 lbs.

I would deduct 3% for in velvet. Concerning the 60 day drying period my book deer shrank 1/2 inch.

I lost about 2" - 3" after the drying period. Not to bad on a 195" deer.

Nope, but the second was done by a different person which was very conservative and detailed. I think most the time guys green score on the back of a pick up bed, just to get a rough number.
