The posting on the 30-06 caliber got me thinking about it. Do you have a favorite caliber, and if so what is your favorite deer rifle caliber? Perhaps a caliber that you have more than one of or you know you will buy again. What grain bullet do you use?

Yes , but after the 30-06 vs. 30-30 debate, maybe someone decided that they weren't as happy with their original choice as they thought they were. People can change their minds about things, can't they???

Well, I don't know that I have a favorite caliber. But my favorite actions are levers. Can't really explain why. Possibly has to do with the "cowboy" era... I just have a fascination for anything "cowboy" or "western." I'd like to have a Marlin .444 lever gun. JUST TO HAVE IT, that's why! LOL

For all around Texas whitetail rifle I would say my 7mm Rem mag. It has alot of range and knockdown power.

I am with JB, lever guns rock!

Even after the 30.06 vs 30/30 thread I still love my original model 94 30/30. It gets used every year.

I think I already said too much in the 30'06 thread
Otherwise it all depends on where and what the game animal is. In Texas, on critters under 300lbs and under 300 yards, as an all around everyday caliber, I've settled on a 270, and if I had to use just one bullet the rest of my life for everything it would be a 150 gr Nosler Partition.
Other places, distances and critters need a different solution.JMHO

Another .270 fan.

When he was young, I told Dale Jr. that hunting and racing are a lot alike. Holding that steering wheel and holding that rifle both mean you better be responsible.

My Favorite Caliber for Texas Whitail is the 25-06, with 117 Gr.Softpoints. Shoots flat like 7MM Mag; don't ruin a lot of meat. I lived in the "Hill Country" for 25 years. Never shot a deer with a 25-06 that moved out of the tracks he was standing in.

I like my Rem 7mag a great deal...though I really am warming up to my 300 win mag, though I shoot lots of hogs and deer with my 22-250, right in the neck or head. The 22-250 is batting just under 100%....as it has one miss...but that was a coyote on the run...second bullet got him though... 300 win mag is perfect, three shots three kills. 7 mag...is alsp 100% aim small miss small.

JB...

The 444 Marlin is an excellent rifle for hunt'n Texas. I have two a 444P and 444T. I call the 444T, with it's 24" barrel, my "Sendero" rifle... what's standing in the sendero at the shot, stays in the sendero! I've taken most of the Texas critters with my 444... mule and whitetail deer and plenty of hogs. Here is a picture of my nilgai I shot this year.

I hunt with the following Marlin levers but my 444 is first... 30-30 Win, 30-30 Ackley Imp, 35 Rem, 375 Win, 44 Mag, 444 Marlin, 45-70 Govt, and 450 Marlin.

I was hunting on the Yuturri Ranch near Raymondville with Wildlife Systems, Inc. My relationship with this outfitter started as I searched for a place that would let me use the 444. Most outfitters, including this outfit, subscribe to the rule of "belted magnums, 30 caliber or better". Greg Simons wasn't familar with the ballistics of the caliber but listened and then stood up and presented my case to the ranch. Worked out well and I've made and will make other hunts with these folks.

I used a lead bullet of my own design. Lee Precision made the mold for me... TLC432-285-RF.

This bullet leaves the barrel of my 444T at 2360 FPS with 3305 FPE! The 444 is an awesome rifle! Sorry, I get worked up about it...
