I know sable can be a hassle... But in the wild they have always seemed timid... Anyone had any problems?

Well I know in high fence Sable are pretty wild and can cause serious problems. In the wild gemsbok can be pretty aggressive I seen few pictures of them with dead tribes men on their horns

I have seen a sable bull in a 20 acre breeding pen run at full speed and hit the chain link fence when you drove by in a vehicle. He ended up breaking his neck after he did it enough. They can be very aggressive when cornered or have lost their fear of humans. Gemsbok or the same or worse in many ways. The bull is very aggressive among females when cornered. When darting they would scare me worse than most exotics because of the aggressive nature. Had a bull that killed his sire when he was less than 2 yrs old. Then proceeded to kill most of is offspring right after birth trying to rebreed the females coming into a false heat cycle. They turned him out after than and he got aggressive with vehicles on the ranch. Scimitar Horn can be aggressive but not as bad. Addax females when they have young will chase you down if you get to close or in between them and the hidden young. All of them can be aggressive so it depends on where they came from when you got them. I know that Rancho Encantado had a growing herd of sable at one time.

I'm pretty sure Jack still has a herd of Sable on Rancho Encantado. I asked him about it a couple months ago.

They are on the list of things that I have been chased by at one time or another and either on my ranch or a different one. Addax and Gemsbok are the most frequent. And I can't think of a time that it was because I was hunting them when I got chased by them. It was usually some situation where I had come across a baby of theirs or at least near one and spooked it before I saw it. That is enough for a mad momma to come at you very quickly. I have also been chased by scimitar oryx at least twice because of that same type of scenario. Scimitar seem to usually just run off from me pretty quick. But one time we had baby dart out in front of us for some reason when we were riding around on the Trekker. The baby was lying close to the edge of the road and when we got close it jumped out into the path rather than heading back into the brush. Well the momma was maybe 30 yards in that same mesquite brush and when the baby cryed out once The momma quickly came to its rescue and chased up about 500 yards I would say aroundon the ranch. It's baby was right behind it the entire time. As for gemsbok and addax, I have been chased by them as well.

I have raised Sable, Scimitar and Addax. They are all aggressive when they have calves. As long as you have plenty of brush in your pens or ranch, most of them will not be a problem. I have known of some with aggressive attitudes. You sell them as quick as you can. That will be safer for everybody as well as the herd.

my son and i came upon a female gemsbok nursing her very young calf. they only trotted a few yards away, and actually the mother took off like a quarter horse at one point and left her young. I think all animals act differently. My excoworker found a very large whitetail buck on her ranch (she said it was a large 5+ year old that was a shooter) that was dead. her biologist determined it was speared by a scimitar.

Think it totally depends on the individual animal, but certainly, any of oryx or sable/roan clan are capable of and will stand their ground. We have a female addax that's pretty bad for the first month or so after she drops a calf, but the rest are pretty calm. She's put a couple nice horn marks on the truck.
