There are one or two quail outfitters over in Coleman, Texas that usually have some really good to great quail leases lined up over several counties including areas around Lake Ivie. If a person is trying to hunt some different areas with some ground that has not been previously hunted, it might be worth it to call the Coleman Chamber of Commerce to find the telephone numbers for these outfitters. It would be hunting wild bobwhite quail and I know they run their own GSP alot, but probably would certainly let you run your own dogs. Sorry I don't know the number or the name at the present time.

Several quail guides over in Albany have just about closed down their hunting for quail due to inconsistent bird leases.

Hope that helps.

Ron

Thanks Ron, just talked to a guy that got back from Albany on a two day hunt and cut it short to a day after finding 2 coveys. Talked to a rancher slightly west of Lubbock that has birds, concentrated around cut milo, and another guy that has some ground west of Amarillo that has consistent 12-15 covey days... it seems that the best birds are west in the farm country and far south Texas. I will check on the Coleman stuff...thanks

We hunted Saturday, 1-12, on 600 acres near Talpa, west of Coleman. Four dogs, three hunters, 0 birds. Leasee said he saw birds earlier in the year. Place had not been hunted for quail. Maybe next year......

Beating a dead horse, but Dad and two other buddies with 5 dogs hunting 10 miles S of Albany today on a 2,500 acre place where the foreman had been graining the roads all week for us --- ZERO BIRDS and not even a false point.

Muddabber, I have one of the best outfitters in the Coleman area and for the last two years most of the birds taken have been around the Sterling City, Big Springs and all the surrounding counties. We have 9,000 acres in Coleman county and we had birds at the first of the season but we think most of the chicks drowned and all we had left we the more mature birds with some of the late hatches. As you know we are on the verge of loosing our habitat again after thoose wonderful rains last spring and summer. We hunted Big Springs two weeks ago and got up seven coveys of blue but had a hard time keeping up with them and some of us are just too old to do it anymore.

Cool Hand

Do you know of any outfitters that have been turning out pen raised birds in that area so they can get some hunts in. I know last year I saw a trailer loaded down with birds going south.

Whoa, I really don't know of any right off hand. Most of the ranchers and outfitters in this area don't like the pen raised birds in with the wild quail and me either. They have a tendancy not to fly or flush like a wild bird so we just choose to stay away from them. If I hear of any I will holler. Thanks, Benny.

I don't hunt anything but wild birds. Just was wondering if any one was releasing pen raised birds in that area. I know their are outfitters down south that have done that and I sure you know that they can carry disease and have seen where the wild bird population will die off from these diseases. Hoping that's not what has happen out west.
