Does the barrel length really make a huge difference for velocity, trajectory in inches, etc on shots inside of 300 yards

I have a CDL with 24 inch barrel and my Dad has old BDL with 22 inch barrel. I swear to you the difference is usually 30 fps in my favor. No difference at all.

Only thing you give up is velocity.

Here is one of the articles, good read

http://www.tacticaloperations.com/SWATbarrel/

Tac Ops took a 26-inch barreled .300 Win. Mag. and chopped the barrel down in one-inch increments as they previously did with the .308 Winchester. Ten rounds of Federal Match 190-grain BTHP Gold Medal were fired from each increment. No velocity was lost from 26 inches to 22 inches. Velocity loss started to occur only after they went below 22 inches

The reason im asking this question is because the rifle federal premium uses for there test shoots is 24" while my 270 has a 22" barrel so if there is no major velocity change what about wind drift and the bullet trajectory on shoots inside of 300 yards on deer sized game

If there is no change in velocity, there is no change in wind drift or trajectory.

also has anyone has seen the article by chuck hawks on this

he states the change in barrel length 1" shorter or longer
Mv 2000-2500 change is 10fps
Mv 2500-3000 change is 20fps
Mv 3000-3500 change is 30fps
Mv 3500-4000 change is 40fps
so if federal premium ammo has a muzzzle velocity out of the barrel at 3060 with a 24" barrel nd i have a 22" barrel would the starting veloicty now be 3000fps since my barrel is 2" shorter and you have to minus 30fps for each inch that is gone hope that wasnt to conufusing confused

And a difference of 60fps will make no significant difference in trajectory or wind drift inside 300 yards.

Inside 300 yards like others have said not much difference in trajectory or wind drift between 22 and 24 inch barrels if all else is equal. All firearms and ammunition is made to specific tollerances max and min specifications. Rifles having min chanmers and barrels will generate more velocity than ones with max dimensions with the same loads. MMost of the time in the manufacturing process chamber reamers start out at max dimension and are used until the minimum chamber dimensions are produced by that reamer, barrel tooling tools are used in a simular fashion. A barrel with minimum dimensions will produce higher chamber pressures and therefore velocity than one with Max dimensions.

An example I worked up loads for 2 Remington Stainless BDLs in 7mmSTWm 26 inch ported barrels on both, and ran those reloads and factory loads across a chronograph. One averaged 200fps faster than the other with both factory loads and reloads.

What I am trying to say is without either running a load across a chronograph or shooting at distances you will not know for sure what those loads will do in your rifle.

the difference in drop at 300 yards between 3000fps and 3060fps is about 1/3". The difference in wind drift (10mph wind) is about 1/4".

Assuming your rifle shoots MOA from the bench, it will shoot a 3" group at 300 yards. A 1/4" variation in a 3" group will not be noticed. And considering you would be shooting from field positions, not a benchrest, the difference would be even less significant.

I suggest you go out in the country, set up a cardboard box at 300 yards and shoot both rifles, using hunting positions, aiming at the middle of the brown box (simulating shooting at a deer). You will see for yourself how little difference there will be.

So how would i go about making a ballistics card for my 22" barrel 270 when federal premium uses a 24" barrel 270 for there ammo tests the range card would be from 25 to 300 yards is there a website that allows you to put in your own information including barrel length?

The data below came from the Federal Premium website. You did not specify which Federal Premium load you use. These data are for the 130gr Sierra BT and the 130gr Nosler Ballistic Tip.

If you sight in about 1.5" high at 100 yards, you should be dead on at 200 and about 6" low at 300 yards. THESSE NUMBERS ARE APPROXIMATE, becasue as noted by several, the velocity in your rifle can vary quite a bit from the published velocity (for more reasons than just the barrel lenght. The ONLY way to know where YOUR RIFLE will hit is to shoot your rifle at various ranges with the ammo you intend to hunt with. And I would strongly recommend that you not shoot at a deer at any range beyond that which you have tested.
