Anyone ever had a round go off by itself. I was going thru my bag on my lunch break today and had a 22 round go off just about in my hand as i was looking for something in my bag. I had a few rounds i thru in my bag from this past weekend and the only thing i thought maybe happened was i had a fully charged rechargeable streamlight battery that i was thinking touched the rim of 22 round setting it off. Is that possible? I had to check my body to make sure i didnt have any holes in me, thankfully i didnt. I didnt see anyone else in the area lying on the ground or crying for help so figured all was ok. Freaked me out. Ive always thrown rounds in my bad without any worries.

Scary stuff right there. Rimfires are a tad more dangerous than most folks think.

I would have had to burn my shorts and my pants after that if it happened to me.

Hey Rickey, Without a gun barrel to direct the explosive force and projectile don't you end up with a firecracker of sorts? Big boom, but no slinging lead. More of a mini pipe-bomb....

I don't know much about bullets but I would think it would definitely be enough to push out a .22 bullet through some flesh. You can pull those things out with your fingers so there is not much pressure to hold that bullet in and explode the cartridge like a bomb. Please correct me if I am wrong and I am glad the op didn't get hurt

it's still dangerous, but you've got 2 projectiles vs the one.

This isn't the exact same scenario, but my nephew in his infinite wisdom was ejecting 22 rounds out of his semi-auto and did not notice they were going into the fire. I did, after three landed in there and stopped him. We backed of a ways until they all went off. I don't know if it was the brass or the lead, but something came shooting out of there like a rocket through the tree tops over us. That's a little different than being in your hand though, because if one end of it was against something firm in the fire then the other end would be forced away quickly.
I also pulled a super stupid when I was a kid and decided to put a shotgun shell in the fork of a tree and shoot the primer with my bb gun, thinking it would just explode. Wrong... Let's just say the brass becomes a projectile that moves very quickly in the direction of the shooter.

Heat can certainly set off a round, but it has to get really hot to do it. Did you happen to have a dud round that failed to fire that you put back into your bag? You might have gotten a delayed fire.
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

with the millions of .22 shells that are laying around my house, many times we have had one thrown in the burn barrel... one time a whole bunch.... I dont know how fast they are moving, probably plenty fast to take out an eye, or make u bleed a lil, but they have never dented the barrel, and have not even come close to making it through.

I think Doug (Scoop) nailed it on the head. I finally got my bag out of the car last night and noticed both the lead and casing were still in my bag. Obviously that means the lead didnt go anywhere. It was like a firecracker going off but since i was at the gas station i didnt want to stick around and investigate too much. This was not a from a misfire, that im 200% sure of. Im Keeping that shell with my arrowhead finds as a souvenir.

Took a piece of .22 cal brass in the sternum once. We dug it out and didn't tell mom. Hurt like heck. Would have taken out an eye for sure.

I did the same thing. It was not the smartest thing that I have ever done
I avoid Dick's and hope they fold.
