I need some comments on an idea I had. Let me know if you think this will work.

I'im thinking about an 8ft tall platform made from plywood and 4x4 posts. On top of that, place a pop up blind. My concern is the wind. What if you bolt down each corner through the plywood. Also, on each corner, run a 6ft piece of 1- 1 1/2" square tubing attached perpendicular to the base. With eye hooks on the square tubing to tie the blind off to. Do you think it will hold?

I've never hunted out of one, simply crawled in one that was set up for display at Academy one time. My thoughts are that the little spring wires that hold it in shape won't take much wind, but will still allow it to flex enough to keep it from shredding itself. I think if you strap it down to keep some of that flex out of it, it'll self destruct in a pretty good breeze.....

my 2 cents. i tried this last year. i made a 7 foot tall stand. one of the issues is the top of the stand needs plus or minus 6 foot by 6 foot for the popup to fit. i bought a cheap popup online and tied it to the top as you talked about and used outrigger to tie off the top strings. the wind beat it up bad. broke a couple of the popup sticks til i went to heavier ones. plans are to take the popup down and build a box instead. yes the pop up works but a box would be more comfortable, able to withstand the weather better, and warmer.

i been watching on game camera this big hog that has been hitting my feeder every night for a week. i sat in my popup/stand last night waiting for him. i heard him screaming in the woods next to my stand and all i could think of was him coming up the ladder (old a frame ladder) after me. i pulled my pistol and sat it on my shooting shelf. i thought a little more protection like some wood would be better.

We tried this and no matter how careful or secure, the wind won every time. So if you do it, don't leave it up when you're not around to monitor the weather.

Don't waste your time. Mother nature will win that battle 10 out of 10 times.

Thanks guys you have talked me out of that idea. I will be going with a standard plywood blind. My wife says our old pool fence needs to go. So now I have a bunch of 1 1/4 inch 14 ga. square tubing for a frame and stairs. Thanks and good hunting.

Here is my brother's blind. This was its third season. I liked it so much I elevated mine last season. The key is to keep the sides from collapsing. We put screws in the tie-down eyes on the floor and made outriggers to tie the side-eyes to. These things deflect the wind pretty well, but if a side collapses it acts like a parachute and will catch every bit of wind.

Couldn't you just collapse the blind each time you leave?

You would have to have a walk way around it cause you got to give the hub style like the one above a helluva tug when its new and your first setting them up.

I would be nervous about climbing up with no support to grab onto and the wind. For the prices of some of these popups, and the fact that you are already investing in a stand/already have, you could probably just use some scraps to build a sturdier blind.
