I am getting ready to buy some climbing stands for the 2011 season. I am not happy with the lean too and tripods I have now. I am looking for advice on how high off the ground should these type of stands be ? All the hunting shows I watch it seems like they are up around 25-30 feet ?

I try to go 20 to 25 feet up. Never had any need to go higher. Climbers feel much better and safer to me than Ladders.

Depends on the trees and trees around you. I've hunt from 12ft to 35ft...

35 is scary when the wind blows.

Climbers are my favorite way to hunt.

I've never hunted anything but tripods and never higher than about 12'. But then, I've never hunted anywhere that had trees tall enough to climb!

I tried to get high enough to have cover behind me, but I also never hunted out of a pine tree

To me height should be determined by the surroundings, I've shot from ground level to 20 Ft. NO need to go higher if you have trees behind you.

It's still about playing the wind!

We hunt land with diversified terrain from creek bottom oaks 20 ft tall and mesquite flats with nothing. The tallest stand I have is a 15 ft ladder. The lowest is a 6ft ladder backed into soe low growing browse in an oak thicket. The mesquite flats i use ground blinds. The 6ft ladder has had deer walk within a foot of it and never look up. I have taken more deer there with a bow than any of my other stands. Its all about the cover you surround yourself with and scent control in my book. If your hidden, dont move, and they dont smell you, they dont have a chance!
