What a surprize. When I left the lease 2nd Week of Jan it looked like golden fields under the feeders because of all the corn lying on the ground and during the season I had nothing coming in except a turkey every now and then.

Yesterday I went up to check on things and the feeders are still throwing but there was very little on the ground and lots of tracks. I usually fill with about 50/50 corn and black eyed peas. I did notice that most all the acorns are either rotted or gone - maybe that has something to do with it. I think the critters are getting hungry so I'm going to increase the black eyed peas in the ratio. Any thoughts?

Tell me more about the black eye peas. I'm throwing 50/50 corn and record rack protein.

Sounds like a good idea to me. No rain soon and they will really be hitting it hard.

I was reading in one of my many mag subscriptions that black eyed peas are a good source of protein & minerals for animals. I went to the feed store and they carry whole dried peas or split peas. Cost a bit more than the corn, but did not seem to be as much as the brand name protein mixes or soy beans. The peas go through a feeder without a lot of problems because they are about the same size as the corn.

I used to use the protein pellets but they tend to crumble and when it rains or condensation forms in the barrel they swell up. up

I also appreciate the info on the peas. Going to try that.

Split Peas run about 12.50 50lb bag about a $1 cheaper than the Record Rack. If you use protein pellets make sure they are coated (they got a name for it) - the coating slows expansion. I don't use the whole seed peas - they are too expensive. Just about every feed store handles em all but I would call first........
