Tierd of being able to shoot 60 yards and ready for the chalenge of the long bow. I have hunted with compound bows since I was 10 years old. My latest bow is a 2006 special order 80# Bowtech Alegence. Ive had my eye on a Martin Savanha longbow. I just think shooting an elk with a longbow would be the ultimate chalenge, with the exception of sheep or goat of corse. Pluss it's only a couple pounds to carry. Any thoughts?

I have hunted almost exclusively with a lonbow or recurve bow since 1998. It takes a lot more practice than a compound, but it is also, in my opinion, more rewarding, and really just more fun. You are not constantly working on "stuff" on your bow, you just go out and shoot. Out to about 25 yards, I don't feel that I am handicapping myself at all, and beyond that, I simply do not take the shot. My advice to you is to get a light draw weight bow to start with so you can develop the proper form. Something around 40-45 lbs. at your draw length, and you don't need to start with an expensive bow. The bow I am shooting 3D with now is a 60's era Ben Pearson Colt, 40# at 28". I bought it off Ebay for $60 and using light carbon arrows, it is a perfect target bow and it is easy enought to hold at full draw that you can concentrate on your form.
I hunt with a 52# Longbow or a 47# recurve, and either will get the job done on any thing in North America if you place the shot well and have a razor sharp braodhead. AND ALWAYS REMEMBER, a well placed shot with a 45# bow is much better than a poorly placed shot with a 75# bow, and that applies regardless of what type of bow you are shooting.

If you want a challenge get a PSE. They will have you shooting all over the place.

I dropped down to a Reflex Grizzly at 60lbs. Its not the fastest thing in the world but does just fine. I don't need a 800 dollar bow that shoots over 300.

yeah, even 300 fps, an animal can still jump the string. i could never get into compounds. i like the crappy one i have, it shoots fast and hard, but, id rather struggle with my recurves. seems more natural, and you can go stump shooting! hah!

I have a 1948 Fred Bear Grizzly recurve that I just love to hunt with. Simplicity. No fancy sights, silencenrs, slings, arrow quivers, cases, releases and strings to mess with. You don't need to sight it in, or worry about brush smacking the sights and knocking them off. Just pull the string back, and let the arrow fly.
I started out with a compound, and like others have said, I was always fiddling with it. I love my recurve. Been using it for 8 years now. I replaced the string when I first got it, and haven't had to do a thing but shoot it since.

Poor Man you won't be downgrading your bow by getting into traditional archery. What you will be doing is upgrading your personal skill/confedence level. When you hit an animal with a perfect shot its all you. When you miss a gimme shot its all you. You will now the highest highs and the lowest lows. Traditional archery just brings the soul of a bow in your hands! Been hunting with them for about 35 years now and still love it!!! Martin makes some great bows both compound and traditional. Anything I can help you with let me know! craig

You wont regret it! While i still enjoy hunting with my bowtech the stick and string is Awesome! I first went to a recurve after getting bored with a compound and was i surprised. People always talk about shooting bows year round or starting in August to get ready. I never did a whole lot of that, and never figured out why its necessary. I feel confident after not shooting for months to uncase a compound and drill a target at 40yds. But this traditional has not been like that at all for me. I have shot hundreds and hundreds of arrows and still would consider my shooting average at best(but it is improving). It has been the most challenging thing i have tried in hunting and enjoy every minute of it.I would encourage everyone to try it when the compound starts getting old. Its dang hard to be good at and a heck of alot of fun!
