This will be my first year to try turkey hunting (or any bird for that matter). I don't own a shotgun but have access to a older Ithaca 37 with 2 3/4" chamber and a fixed modified choke. Would I be better off buying a new 870 with a 3" chamber and screw in choke over using the 37? Would the bigger shells and tighter choke give me a noticeable advantage?
Thanks

The Ithica will work, but with that modified choke, distance and pattern density is going to suffer.

If money is not the issue, spring for the 870.

Install a Jellyhead choke in it. .660 constriction

Shop around, you can find a better price than off their website

Load it with Hevi-Shot Magnum Blend.

I have this set-up, and have helped several others with this exact same set-up. Turkey killing machines!!

Thanks for the input. I will probably start the season with the Ithaca and spring for the 870 (with that choke you recommended) if I have any luck at calling them at all. I've hunted deer for several years, but turkey hunting is a whole new game grin

I would also go with the 870 when your ready. I think your going to love it and I know you will love Turkey hunting. Get your calls and go for it.
