I know a few fatherless boys who would love to hunt some turtles.

My grandfather had the same problem on his farm pond. He built my brother and I a tree house that overlooked the pond. We would climb into the tree house without being seen and shoot turtles with a single shot scoped 22.

One of those breakover pellet guns would be deadly and quiet enough to use.

I've shot them with a .22 and a 20 gauge until I'm sick of shooting them. The more I shot the smarter they got. At one point I thought I had made a pretty good dent in their population until the first sunny warm day following a week long cold spell and there wasn't an open spot on hundreds of yards of shoreline because of all the durned turtles sunning themselves! Looked like a Ninja convention on the French Riviera.
Once they learned that the F-150 driving around the pond was a danger, I had to switch to using the Jeep, they are actually that alert to know the difference. After that I went to the small JD tractor and finally to the Husqvarna riding mower. Now they have all our vehicles made and I can't get close. Turtles are smart! You have to belly craw into position in full camo with the wind in your favor so they cant see or smell you. THEN you can cut loose with an all out assault on them with your weapon of choice! They will never know what hit them! You have it all wrong. You get within 21 feet, grab your sword and start screaming..... You should post a video of that!
A thousand reasoned opinions never equal to one case of diving in and finding out.

A couple of floating turtle traps will clean them out in a hurry.

I have a suppressor and scoped 10/22 with a 30rd mag - probably take out several before any had clue. Much quieter than a pellet gun.

Somehow, I don't think the direct approach is an option for some folks.

We have a couple of floating turtle traps at our lease and sometimes you just hate to check it because of how much ammo it takes to kill all of the turtles trapped. We've been known to stack them up to conserve bullets!

There used to be a huge market for them. I went bowfishing with a guy who took the fish we shot and used them to bait traps, then he sold the turtles to someone who shipped them to China. I'm not sure if exporting turtles is legal any more, but it might be worth checking into. This guy said he made about $4k a month selling turtles. This was probably about 5 yrs ago.

We had a turtle problem in a couple of ponds we had stocked with fish. I bought a couple of turtle traps from Dunn's fish farm in Oklahoma, they are on the internet if you want to look them up. They work very well and you don't have to bait them. They crawl up on the tilting sunning platforms and are dropped in to the trap, bet we've caught a couple of hundred of them, which has basically eliminated them from our ponds. All you need is some 22 shells to finish the job and dispatch them.

Not trying to be ugly but I think those turtles had better oral hygiene than the turtle man!

Well, after reading this post last week, I thought I would see what all the hoopla was about with "hunting turtles". I was out this weekend and knew where a pond was so I snuck up as quietly as I could. I got behind a tree and used that for cover so I could approach without being seen.
When I peeked out from behind that tree-I saw about 30 turtles the size of dinner plates sunning themselves on a dead tree that was down in the water. I brought up my rifle and was trying to pick one out-darned if they did not see that little bit of movement and off they went! Only one turtle left.. He was facing away from me and trying to figure out why his buddies were hauling tail. Anyway, by the time he looked back at me, I touched off a 55 Grain V-max from my 22-250. I was aiming right for the center of his shell. I *THINK* I hit him.. I say I think so because he launched air borne at the shot about 6 ft. into the air and kind of off to the left.. Maybe I shot under him and the force sent him sailing into the air??? Smart little critters. I waited a full 30 minutes and not another turtle poked his head up.. Maybe they were eating the remnants of their buddy.
My son shot one recently with his .17HMR and literally blew the back half of the shell off. He was thrilled with the carnage.
A hog is nothing more than a bullet receptacle.

They are smart for sure. I used to have my mom spot them in the pond for me. I's shoot them w/ a Ruger mark II.

You don't have to shoot a turtle to kill it. If you have them in the trap, stab them. I used to fish small ponds and catch turtles all the time. A 8" filet knife inserted between the neck and the leg will make it go limp in a hurry. Cheaper than trying to shoot 50 turtles in a box.

Ok, this sounds like fun. If you'll have us I have a 5 year old son and 3 year old daughter I'll take up there and see how many we can knock off.
