I took my new pistol to an indoor range today, and had a first happen. As my wife was loading her magazine getting ready to shoot, I had a slug hit me HARD in the shoulder. It broke skin, and left a pretty good whelp. I was shocked. I found the slug at my feet, so I brought it home to weigh it. It weighed in at 139.6 grains.

This may be a common occurence, but I have never seen it. I promise you one thing...I am sure glad it got me in the shoulder, and not the head.

So, anyone have this happen before? At almost 140 grains left in the slug, it must have been a large caliber to begin with.

Relatively common occurence when shooting steel plates w/ a handgun - usually doesn't hit hard enough to break the skin, but it still hurts. Definitely better be sporting your ANSI approved eye protection...

What kind of target stop did this ricochet off?

I bet you won't ever forget to bring shooting glasses. I have heard of this with competitive shooting especially shooting steel targets. I think it's pretty rare though. Good thing it was the shoulder. Go buy you a lottery ticket.

I got hit in the huevos with one once, but I didn't look for it, I was too busy rolling on the ground passing in and out of consciousness.

Always put on my glasses when I got on the shooting line until I got hit on the cheek while sitting on a bench on the 25 yard line. Now my glasses go on when I walk in the gate.

Had a 9mm hit me once on the range in the same way. Not a fun experience.

Had a chunk of lead from a .44mag hit my steel toe boot one time at Alpine, my buddy was shooting his Colt Anaconda. That'll freak ya out a little.

Had .45's come back at me. Watch that guy on youtube who
shoots and the bullet almost kills him coming back.

We have had .45s and 50 bmg's come back at us. The 50 makes a pretty scary sound.

About 10-12 years ago a 16 year old boy, competing in a pistol shoot was hit in head and killed by a ricochet bullet at Arlington gun range.

I have never been hit, but heard some flying by me at a match at Tiger Valley once. Stationary steel targets are whats supposed to do this the worst.

For this reason, I only shoot poppers (spring loaded) ones at my own range at close range.

in 2008 i was at a friends bbq. we were shooting clays, and a small swinging steel target at 50 yds w/ a 22. i was shooting the steel when one of the shots ricocheted back and grazed the host in the neck, left a nice mark across his neck. about 3/16th inches more to the right he would have taken it in the jugular.

she said ,why does that ammo have pretty green tips on it? the guy said its the eco-friendy ammo.

I'm glad I read this thread. I'll put on my glasses prior to entering the range.

At shorter distances this can/will happen.
