Last year was the first year I ever turkey hunted. I started off the season with a box call and got my first bird opening morning. But when I was crawling across a plowed field it was pretty difficult to get the box call out of my pocket and call without being spotted.
A couple weeks later I was in Academy and found a 3-pack of Primos (I think) mouth calls on clearance for like $3. I bought them just to give them a shot.
All of them feel extremely different in my mouth. One is really soft along the edges, and I have a lot easier time calling with it. Is there anyway to determine which ones are like this without taking them out of the pack?
How do you pick out a mouth call without actually putting one in your mouth and calling with it?

How do you pick out a mouth call without actually putting one in your mouth and calling with it? Once you find a call that you like, pay attention to the shape, and the type of tape that was used to manufacture the call, and look for those same qualities in other manufacturers. As far as sound and tone of the call, only trial and error will tell the tale. Always look closely at the reeds. They should be flat and relaxed, yet appear slightly stretched. Stay away form reeds that look lumpy, or overstretched. Wish there was an easier way to tell. So far, I haven't found it. Gman
