So far I have contacted one individual on this forum shooting traditional MLs - black powder, patched round ball or shot and a side lock. Anyone else out there?

What caliber(s) or gauges?
Ignition?
Long or short barrels?
What game do you hunt with traditional MLs?
Hunting success last year? Ever?
What areas do you hunt?

The answer is FLINTLOCK! Now, what was the question?

I've just gotten really interested in getting a ML for myself and have been trying to learn all I can. So far, haven't been able to locate a "local" dealer or shop that handles the traditionals.

Lyman GPR 50 cal percussion and a Lyman GPR flinter. I shoot .490 balls patched with .018 ticking. 90 gr of fffg in both. I grind my pan charge in a mortar down to about ffffffffffg. Basically, it's like flour. Probably won't work so good in the rain but I hate hunting in the rain so it evens out. I make my own flints. Here's a pic of the percussion that I built. I won the flinter in a raffle built by a guy in California that owns a muzzleloading forum. His stock is a different finish but the steel is basically the same. I don't have a pic of it on this computer. Also included a couple of pics of shot groups from the percussion. Both groups are at 50 yards; me sitting on the ground resting my elbows on my knees. I blame the fliers in the top pick on the first outing with my new target triggers. smile

I don't have any rifles yet, but I do have two cap and ball revolvers. 1858 remington and a 1847 Colt Walker (should be here by Friday.) I plan on taking the walker on my next hog hunt.

Back when I ran the roads shootin in matches there was a vendor out of Witchita Falls named Marvin Brandt. He took a lot of su-pplies to big shoots to sell. Carried a few guns and kits but sure to know folks in your area.

I pretty much only shoot traditional mls now...I've been bit by the bug. I have 2 perc rifles and 2 flint rifles and am building a JP Beck .54 cal flinter. I also have a couple flint pistols.

The deer below I got with my .50 Investarms flinter this year. This was on a Texas ml only draw at Lake Whitney. I was using 75grs fff, .490 ball, .018 pillow ticking.

Let's see some pics!

Here are a couple of pics of the rifle. The top pic is on the builders back deck in California. One of his personal rifles is on the left. Mine is on the right. I don't know why he didn't adorn mine with Turkey beards! The bottom pic is both of my rifles in my back yard. Both have Davis Target triggers set at about 1.5 lb. Something to get used to but a beautiful thing once you adjust yourself to it. The flinter has an L&R replacement lock.

And to those that learn to overcome flinters flinch-- flehan flehan flehan flehan flehan flehan flehan

but we plink with patched balls and 50 grains of powder and thats a ton of fun!

PRBs and 50 gr fffg are the perfect plinking load for both my rifles. Recoil is so light you can shoot all day and accuracy is scary good.

My all around favorite(s) are my .40 caliber guns. One percussion and one flint. Both are Southern mountain style with Douglass barrels 42" long. have taken a couple of deer with the.40 flintlock but it is a marginal caliber in my opinion.

Just put together a .54 flintlock using a Renegade stock, GM barrel and L&R lock. Looks like it is gonna be a shooter and will do fine on dder, bear and elk.

TC Hawkins .45 and .50 percussion
Ruger Old Army w/90gr buffalo bullets--dont have this one anymore, lookin for another--killed several deer with this handgun, those buffalo bullets seem to work better out of this gun than round ball

I shoot an investarms 54 cal hawken replica, it is the carbine model. It shoots pretty good to me, keep them in a basebal size spot at 50 yards. I have killed 2 deer and a hog with it.

Shoot 315 grain buffalo ballets over 95 grains of pyrodex.

Heck ya, I love my TC Hawkin mussle loader 54. cal 100 grains of ffg black powder and a 530 grain round ball. Took a nice black bear with it last year off of my elk carcase. For the story of this hunt go to my website the stories page. Link is my signature. Keep the spirit alive and God bless
