Buddy of mine got bored one time and shot a skunk under the feeder and when we went down there to move it with a shovel it suprisingly didn't have a strong smell... I guess it would kinda depend where you hit em... Shoot em in the face

I am a skunk killer. I got 3 last week. I shot one with a shotgun and the other got it sort of differently.
I kill about 6 skunks a year and it seems like all are different. I have shot them with 22s and 12 guage shotguns. It seems like the ones that raise their tails before the shot stink. The ones that don't raise their tails don't stink. I always stalk them and if they see me first they raise their tail before the shot.
The key to getting rid of the smell is to do it fast. Shoot it and remove it from the area fast. They seem to get worse with time. If the buzzards get to them, the smell will never go away. I like to shoot them right before a rain shower. It always nocks the smell down.
If you are planning on keeping the skin and it doesn't smell, don't freeze it whole. I did that and the scent leaked out and stunk up the entire freezer.
My favorite firearm is a 12ga with improved cylinder choke with #5 copper plated lead pheasant loads. It just lays them out without another twitch.
Last year I trapped two. I successfully removed one without it spraying. I then released it and took care of business.
Good Luck and have fun.

One more thing to add. If the smell gets in your house or car, the best thing to do is air it out. If you keep it closed, it will never go away. Any clothes you wear while skunk hunting need to be left outside even if you think they don't smell.

Good Luck and have fun. Same load Im using here at my house--killed at least a dozen in the last year anywhere from 5 yards to 25 yards--#5 pheasant loads lays em out, NO spray!!

I've killed a whole s**t load of the little rascals. I've shot them with .22 lr, .17 hmr, 12 gauge, .223 rem, and even one with a .270 win. I have NEVER had one that didn't spray.....even when shot in the head (killing them instantly). Stinky little buggers.

Shot a bunch of skunks (and raccoon and opossum) back in college while an intern at the Attwater Prairie Chicken NWR. Getting paid to hunt was a great thing. We used 12g with #2 steel. Every skunk let go with a cloud of stink. Some would put out a huge cloud that covered an entire pasture for the rest of the night, and on others it would just squirt or dribble out the back end. It could sometimes take a minute or so to happen, and I once was sprayed lightly on of those delayed sprays.

99% of them will spray. Some will wait a litte before they do it. It doesn't seem to matter where you hit them or what you hit them with.

I trapped one in a live cage once. I went to go shoot it with my pistol...I guess I was waiting for a visual "cloud of stink" and thought I could dodge it in case it tried to spray me. Guessed wrong. That "cloud of Stink” is invisible and I smelt for days. It also ruined my live trap even after soaking it in a pond for a couple of weeks.

throw dirt on them after you shoot & they spray. helps get rid of a LOT of the smell.
if you trap one live, drown it...no smell that way.

I shot one we got in a trap yesterday. The key is they can't be tense, sit back and let them be completely calm and pop em at the base of the skull. And let them sit for a few minutes so they don't flop. If they are not 100% calm and comfortable they will spray. We shoot em in foot hold traps all the time and have good luck. Funny thing is, about 90% of the time they don't even spray when the trap grabs them! Good luck!

Anytime a skunk gets there back broken they will automatically spray. That is why so many road kills stink. They get under a vehicle and jump up and get there backs broken. Then they leave there mark for hours or days.

Me and my buddies kill em every weekend when we spotlight, it depends if they know your here or if there running for dear life. They hardly ever spray when we shoot, but we pretty much detroy with three or four different people shooting at the same time. And there not a game animal it doesn't matter what you shoot them with, ppl sound stupid when the say that..just shoot em with whatever you got with you.
Thanks for all the positive THF support. Y'all are awesome.

It would take a lonely, lonely man to put a skunk in his own freezer. Now I might put a skunk in someone elses freezer!
