If you shoot behind the shoulder , you will hit to far back. The vitals are farther forward then a deer . Neck is good 2 inches low and behind the ear.

Where should you shoot a hog?? What caliber is good for hogs?? Would a 45. Long Colt be ok?? That is what I've been using of late. I reload and shoot them from a rifle so they are not your typical 45 LC and mine are pushing a 300 grain bullet at 1600 ft. per sec. Just behind the ear on the hogs and they are done! So far my count is 5 pigs and 1 coyote at 130 paces.

Thursday at 12:45 PM #33 Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Ive killed them with my 22 mag a many times.. like stated above, shot placement is key when using smaller calibers

There was a fellow that showed a dissected view of the hog. His point was that the heart was low behind the front legs. He also showed the extra padding on the shoulder to avoid.
I'll have to take his word for this because I have only seen hogs on my game camera!

The shot I usually take depends on whether or not I want the skull as a euro mount. Meat hogs get it right in the ear. If it's got good sized cutters and I want a mount, then it's a little farther down the neck for a spine shot. As has been said, try to stay away from strictly shoulder shots. Here is a pic of a 140Lb sow I took two weeks ago. She was not big by any means, but you can see the depth of the 'shield' hogs have that wraps around the shoulders and back. This is what seals up entry/exit holes and adds to the difficulty of tracking a hog hit poorly. Are you using factory ammo or reloads? Not sure what you are shooting, but try not to use factory ammo if you've got an older Winchester with the toggle link innards. Even after a warning, a friend of mine blew out his Uberti 1873 rifle in .45lc using ammo too powerful for that particular design. Good luck and post pics if you are successful.
