I have never shipped a firearm before, but now have agreed to ship a Ruger 10/22 to San Antonio. If I remember correctly from the forum, no FFL is required for long guns shipped within the state.
My questions are: Does the shipping carton have to be marked, or declared to be a rifle or weapon? What is the best way to ship....USPS, UPS, or other?
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the information Dieterich....it helps.
I have seen at various times others on THF asking for the "rules" regarding shipping guns within Texas to other Texans. I am certain that the majority of the time it was concluded that you could ship long guns without an FFL participating, but you had to include an FFL if you were shipping hand guns.
If anyone else has experience with this subject matter, I would appreciate your comments.

I've also never shipped to anyone but an FFL. I am fairly certain that you must ship to a FFL *unless* you are shipping the gun to yourself - i.e. you are going hunting and ship to your lodge or wherever. This link might help you out.
This is wrong.

Iliketohunt....can you elaborate on this?
Anyone else have any expertise on this subject?...I do not want to "assume" it is OK to ship without using an FFL, then find out later I was wrong.
Again....any comments would be helpful and appreciated.

Again....any comments would be helpful and appreciated. You can ship long guns from one individual to another within the state of Texas without using an FFL.

Sig226Fan.... I knew you would know; your comments arrived after I sent the last reply.
My plan is to ship via UPS in a plain re-inforced cardboard container, with nothing to indicate a firearm is inside. If I want to insure for replacement value, do I have to disclose the contents as a rifle on the shipper form?
thank you in advance for your help with this. Bill

thank you in advance for your help with this. Bill I have done this and no you do not have to say a gun is enclosed. I did this last time I shipped my rifle back to Remington and they even sent me the packaging label for UPS.

This is wrong. What part is wrong as I need to know so I don't mess up shipping something. If you do not mind state how you do it so we all know. TIA.......

I have already stated. Geez people, go use a freaking ffl then if you want, I don't care. But you don't have to.

There's no reason to lie about it to UPS. Tell the truth, and use a UPS owned center that knows the rules, or if prepaid, which you can do online, hand it to a driver somewhere.
If they ask, and you tell them otherwise, and they have an insurance claim (they are self insuring by the way), they will deny your claim.
UPS has good rules online, or at least they did at one time.
I like UPS, then FEDEX, then the post office. Our local PO is great, but nationwide they don't do well with firearms.

Thank you Vernon. I was told by my buddy, that works at UPS, not to state that a gun was inside. But you are correct using UPS first as they always get it there with no problems.

From ATF's website:
A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.
[18 U.S.C. 922(a)(2)(A), 922(a) (3), 922(a)(5) and 922(e), 27 CFR 478.31 and 478.30]

It really depends. Very small tears if rehabbed correctly may take 6 weeks or more to heal (or strengthen) on their own but more severe tears (especially complete tears) may never heal on their own and will need to be surgically repaired.
