My feeders and game cams are all 6 volt in one way or another, either 4 d or C cells or one 6 volt.

What happens if I attach a regular size 6 volt tractor battery to it? It would last longer than the over priced small ones. 4 d cells were $5.97 at WalMart this year.

Will it burn up the feeder motor or the camera?

Can't speak for the cameras, but we used 6v lawn-tractor batteries to oerate our feeders for years. Far as I know 6 volts is 6 volts, doesn't matter where it comes from.

I connected a single 6v to replace the four c batteries my camera had. The camera turns on but for some reason it won't go to sleep mode or take pics. Does anyone know what I have to do?

6v is 6v no matter what.. some of the cheaper cameras just dont like to be messed with. I have tryed it on the cheaper ones and they did the same thing.. My other cameras with the external port for an extra battery run on 12v battery and I then connect a solar panel to that and never have to worry about dead batteries anymore.. Been running them this way for about 2 years now without a problem..

I did the samething myself I opened up the camera.. followed the hot lead.. found there was 2 hot leads.. you need the + and the - coming from the main board..if you connect them wrong you can fry the board.. or it may not operate correctly as you stated. I also put a solar panel on all my cameras and don't have to worry about them going dead anymore. Good luck!

I have a Primos (6 Volt) camera and they told me when hooking up an external battery remove the "C" cell bateries. This is as oppossed to Moultrie Who stated that when using an external power source (12 Volt) the "D" cells act as a conduit for the current so leave them in, even if they are drained and dead. So Check the Manfacturer of the camera Hope this helps.

Thanks all. I expect I'm going to burn something up so I'll probably start with the Wildview. Well, maybe I'll call them first.

Dave, isn't the Wildview a 12v and doesn't it have an external power jack on the bottom right?

No, it's a 6 volt and is set up for 4 D cells. It has the external jack that I can use for a Duracell or other small 6 volt. However, I've always wondered why I couldn't use a 6 volt automobile or tractor battery for cameras or feeders. When it comes to DC stuff, I'm electrically challenged.

Dave, not sure if you have looked or not, but this shows to be 12v. I know mine is 12v.

OK, I called Wildview. The bottom line is that automotive batteries will burn them up.

Dave,
You said the camera runs on 4d or 4c alkaline batteries
In series that would be 1.5V x 4 = 6volts
6 volts DC is 6 volts DC.

The larger 6 volt lead acid battery would have a higher amp hr rating giving you more run time. As long as the higher amp hr battery is of correct voltage it will not burn up camera.

Thanks James.

I hope that next year I'll actually need to take pictures of deer.

I used a broom handle cut to size with a thumbtack for the pos and neg terminal.Drilled a small hole in the bottom to run the wires to a 6v feeder battery
