Greetings, all. I've just joined. I am hoping someone can direct me to a supplier for pen-raised quail and/or pigeon. Hopng there is someone within easy drive time. ????

I am owned by both English and Irish. My oldest boy is 8-ish, a rescue and "field type" with high intensity. We believe he was "smoked" by someone who thought they knew what they were doing. Since then... he prefers to hunt alone and it's very sad. I would like to be able to get him over it. I did send him up to a trainer in OH a few years back and she made some progress with him. I am hoping that enough time has elapsed, that he is more relaxed now, and might actually be able to make some headway. I know we would have to take it slow and very strategic with him, in a very positive manner. Is there anyone in the area that might be willing to work with us on this or anyone you could recommend?

My second boy is a Canadian import out of show lines. I did not anticipate that he would have much if any instinct. That seems to have been true 'til recentlhy. He is just turning three and seems to have developed a little bird sense and interest.

The last is a 20-mo. old Irish boy from very good dual champ. lines. I have limited experience (bird planting, riding in the gallery @ field championships, scouting...and a few AKC JH tests).

Hoping for great input. Would like to help these boys develop into something more interesting ;-)

Welcome to the forum. Sounds as if you have a mountain to climb. You simply have too many questions for me to answer. So much depends on the pup. There are pros in our NSTRA region. Bring your pups out to our Katy trial in March. You can get answers, and birds there.

I could get started in the interim if I had birds for yard work.

Is there a date in March?

my input would be to plant the pen raised birds and let your dog learn to hunt and point them on there own with absolutely no
interference from you. keep your mouth shut except for praise. let him free run no check cord. let him bump birds and chase. the chasing gets them fired up about birds. only thing you dont want is for them to catch the birds and that is always a possibity with pen raised birds and young dogs.

Yes, I would love to have someone to work with locally. As it is, I am sending the Irish up to OH next week. I offered that back to his breeder, a she has a vested interest in her lines and she would really like to see her pick male pup from the last litter. It's hard to let them go when they just walked into your life, so a big part of me is regretting the decision. It will be good for him, though. We don't have many details but were told that his previous owner was working him on chukkar in LA. He died unexpectedly Christmas morning, family was uninterested in the Irish, and the breeder called me to ask me if I could take him in while she worked on getting him back to her. In the interim, he elected me as his person and we ultimately decided it was a good match. In the interim of his stay @ the home away from home arrangement, it would be good to have developed relationship with a local trainer for when he comes home... and I know I most likely need the most work (though I *have* been out there and know the drills (for the most part as a beginner).

Here is a photo of my least interested boy working at bird finding today.

Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden.
Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.
