So there are two fellow members that said the Hornet is the best caliber ever made and anybody that uses anything bigger is a "gut shooting idiot". Not his exact words but it sums what he said up pretty simply. So my question is, O.K. the Hornet can kill a deer but what is the max range for this little caliber, 40 - 50 yards? I don't think the Hornet can handle 200 yards personally, or any kind of cross wind for that matter. Am I an idiot for thinking the Hornet is too small for ethical kills?

Can someone point me in the direction of the overloading advice? I found the other claims about this caliber being sufficient.

I was hitting Pdogs out past a 100 easy with my Contender super 14 .22 H. Too much wind plays hell with these little pills. A rifle would get you 150 yds plus even better. One thing to remember is if you load HOT to get out there ..you're brass won't last as long. I've gotten 8 to 9 reloads from my brass and still going out of my TC. Trouble with me is my eyesight played along with the wind and gave me double trouble. good luck.
I don't know you, but I have met you a thousand times.

I love my hornets and yes they will kill a deer (so will a 22 LR), and in Texas hornets are legal for it. I would not use one past 100 yards on a deer and that is with perfect conditions. I know several old ranchers in Texas that the hornet is their main gun but they know it well.
IMO the Hornet is at its best on coyote and smaller critters inside 200 yards

Not very lethal at long distance. Not enough powder or lead.

needs to be a single shot too, that way the hunter will be more likely to wait for the perfect shot!

I guess I'm one of those "idiots" although I never said it was the "best" a decade + of providing culling and harvesting services for ranches all over the hill country. The little round has served me well. Most of these operations are 20-40 kills over 2 to 3 days. We would go out in kill whatever the ranch wanted, might be axis, whitetail, sika, fallow ect... when you need to kill 20-40 head in two days all you shoot are head shots, we don't want to track any animals. Also the tiny gun is lower noise and tended to stir the critters up less than me marching around with my swift or STW blowing out the ranch. I do not recomend it to anyone that doesn't shoot & shoot a lot! I also never put this in the hands of a child or inexperianced shooter. I have yet to need make a shot over 140 @ a "deer" with this round. If the ranch has been shot a bunch or it's animals like black buck and sheep we bring out the powder burners 22-250 on up..
I think the level of disgust with people that hunt with this round is the fact that maybe your not accurate enough with your .575T-rex and can't fathom people who wait for head shots.
Also, coming from a family full of marines I would have figured devildog might understand that some people qualify as expert some don't...

It's funny that everybody thinks that nobody else can shoot a gun! It's not a freaking challenge to put the crosshairs on a deer, whether it's their heads, ears or shoulder. For people to say a hornet is fine for everybody is soooo stupid, not everybody hunts in the hill country where deer are shot at 50 yards. At my place the feeders are set at 200 yards, you going for a head shot at a trophy deer at that range?

I ain't shooting a trophy in the head for any reason and I ain't shooting unless it's a trophy, ear holing pigs I don't have an issue with, I assure u I can hit a deer head with my .300 anytime I want to but I choose to not but it is pointless to argue with a SNIPER and his hornet
