I have searched and read on the website but I am a little confused...

When do they start the permit issuing process for lake Whitney? (I think they start Aug 16)

Is it a lottery?

Can I mail early or is it worth it to drive my butt down there and camp out smile ?

Anybody on here hunt the area?

My parents neighborhood backs up to Cedron Creek and I have always seen deer back there in the 20+ years they have had their place. I have always hunted private land but this year will be a little different for me and the convience of the land being about a block away is key.

Ideas, comments, suggestions???

I don't know anything about the permits, but hunt the land Cedron Creek runs through just before it hits the corps land. It always sounds WWIII from that direction, but I've assumed it's duck hunters on the water.

Lots of deer in the area, though not necessarily many big ones. Lots of deer per acre and very few hunters per acre on the private land that surrounds that area.

Biggest buck I've seen killed was hit by some duck hunters driving right in front of me on 56 one morning about a mile from where Cedron Creek goes under the roadway. Was tempted to pick him up and tag him.

Part of the WWII you might be hearing is a private range on one the ranches that borders Cedar Shores (the Canyons)...

I hit a pig a few years back in my old dually just the other side of the cedron bridge on 56 headed towards the canyons.

I thought most of the land on the side of the highway was owned by the W4.... You hunting out there?

Just like East Texas - not a deer anywhere.

The big deer like to stay in the neighborhoods and parks. They aren't stupid; they know you're trying to kill them...I've had a couple of massive bucks come through our yard the last couple of years. One night, I had the blinds up and it was pitch black outside. All the sudden the motion activated security light clicks on shining on a big old buck just looking at me...Scared the dickens out of me.

We've had an abundance of deer roaming through our neighborhood this year. I've never seen it like this before. The does are HUGE. We've also had some smaller bucks mixed with the big boys. It still amazes me that I can walk out my door and have deer walking around. Of course, the zombie deer are a different matter. They are real. They are out there. They are looking for you.

Is it a lottery?No

Can I mail early or is it worth it to drive my butt down there and camp out smile ? It is like your hunting license, so if you get one now you will have to get another in August. But you can try your hand at some pig hunting!

Anybody on here hunt the area? I did this year a couple times. Saw a few, just alot smarter than most deer.

My parents neighborhood backs up to Cedron Creek and I have always seen deer back there in the 20+ years they have had their place. I have always hunted private land but this year will be a little different for me and the convience of the land being about a block away is key.

Ideas, comments, suggestions??? FILL OUT YOUR SURVEY AT THE END OF THE YEAR! I heard of quite a few guys not and didn't get to hunt this year.

Just remember it is public land and you might have someone setup close to you. You can't campout on the land either.

Yeah, it's a beautiful ranch. If you're in that neighborhood just south of Cedron Creek, the W-4 actually wraps around you a bit. The land bordering that neighborhood to the south is part of the W-4, though I've never hunted that portion. Did see a bald eagle on that part of the ranch a few years ago though.

I haven't hunted down there as much the last few years, but still try to make it down when time permits. For many years, there was next to no hunting pressure. You had several large ranches all touching that area, with the biggest being the Powell Ranch at around 29,000 acres. It was split into fourths and sold maybe 5-8 years ago. I had heard Goldman-Sachs bought the portion nearest 56, but I'm not sure.

Really pretty area down there.

Just for Fun:

Anybody Know where the Storm Shelter is on the outside of a field that borders Cedron?

If so,

We spent a lot of time back there and on the creek banks farther down the trail in HighSchool before they fenced it all off.

from what i understand, you have to stop by corps of engineers office and get a permit from them. it doesnt cost any money but thats what i was told.

to all you who live around there, ive heard there is a bunch of turkeys?

There are more turkeys in that area than anywhere I've ever hunted. I used to spend 2-3 weekends per month down there (and much more during deer season) and doubt there has ever been a day that I didn't see a turkey. I've literally seen several hundred in a single day while driving around. I can remember at least one day in the deer stand where I saw well over 100 deer, though not many of them within shooting range.

Lots and lots of wildlife in that area.

Bringing this back up.

I went and wandered around last weekend around sun-up and saw all kinds of trails on girl scout island. Saw a few doe as well.

With my little one on the way, I think the public area will be my primary hunting area for next season. Can't wait!

My folks have a house that borders CE land in White Bluff. All you have to do is get a permit from the Corps to hunt it; I've heard them say bow only - not sure about shotgun. I've seen some good size turkey and great 8-10 pointers walking right behind their house!
